How the Official MCP Registry Shows Recently Updated Servers
Updated
The Official MCP Registry surfaces server updates through a Recently Updated section on its main page. That section lists servers that have changed recently, and it includes a Show only latest versions toggle plus a search box so you can narrow what appears. If the list fails to load, a Retry control lets you reload it. These are the only update-related controls visible in the registry's own interface evidence; the page does not document a sort order, refresh interval, or update definition beyond the section name.
What the Recently Updated section contains
When you open the registry, the page loads a server list under the heading Recently Updated. The visible states are:
- Searching... — shown while the list is being fetched.
- Loading servers... — the list is still resolving.
- Retry — appears when loading does not complete, letting you request the list again.
- Previous / Next — pagination controls for moving through the results.
The section is the registry's default view of change activity, so it answers "what changed lately" rather than "what exists" — though the same list is also the entry point for browsing servers generally.
Filtering to latest versions only
The Show only latest versions option changes what the list returns. With it enabled, the registry restricts results to the newest version of each server rather than showing every version entry. This matters because a server that publishes frequently could otherwise occupy several rows for the same tool.
Use it when:
- You want one row per server and don't care about version history.
- You are scanning for tools to install and want the current release.
- The list feels noisy because a few servers update often.
Leave it off when you need to see that a server has multiple versions or want to compare version entries.
Combining search with the update list
The search box filters the same list the Recently Updated section populates. Typing a term narrows results to matching servers, and the Show only latest versions setting continues to apply on top of that filter. The practical sequence is:
- Open the registry and wait for the server list to finish loading.
- Optionally enable Show only latest versions.
- Enter a search term to narrow the list.
- Use Previous / Next to page through results.
Expected result: a filtered, paginated list of servers drawn from the recently updated set, with one entry per server if the latest-versions option is on.
When the list doesn't load
If the section stalls or returns nothing, the page offers Retry. Selecting it re-requests the list. The evidence shows this as the recovery path; it does not describe error codes or partial-failure behavior, so treat Retry as the first step and re-check the search term or the latest-versions toggle if the list still looks wrong.
Choosing an environment for update checks
The registry exposes three server targets, which matters if you are querying updates programmatically rather than through the page:
| Target | Base URL |
|---|---|
| Production | registry.modelcontextprotocol.io |
| Staging | staging.registry.modelcontextprotocol.io |
| Local | localhost:8080 |
Use Production for the real, current server list. Use Staging if you are testing against pre-release behavior. Local points at a registry running on your own machine. The page also offers a Custom option for entering a different base URL. The evidence does not state whether staging and production lists differ in content or refresh timing, so verify that yourself if it affects your decision.
What the registry does not tell you here
The visible interface does not specify how "recently updated" is defined, how often the list refreshes, or whether updates are ordered by time. If you need those guarantees — for example, to build a monitor that alerts on new server versions — the registry page alone is not enough; you would need the API reference and docs linked from the site to confirm the underlying behavior.
