How to Check Real-Time Traffic and Road Conditions on QuickMap

Updated

QuickMap (quickmap.dot.ca.gov) is Caltrans' interactive situational awareness map for California. It displays real-time traffic cameras, lane closures, and road conditions on a single map. To check conditions for a specific road or area, open the site, enter a location to pan the map (or drag/zoom manually), then turn on the layers you need — cameras, closures, or road conditions. You can also call the road information line at 1-800-427-7623 for highway conditions.

Locating a Road or Area on the Map

The map is the primary control. You have two ways to get to a location:

  • Enter a location to pan the map directly to it.
  • Pan and zoom manually using the on-screen controls or keyboard.

The page exposes these map controls:

Control Action
← / → Move left / right
↑ / ↓ Move up / down
+ / − Zoom in / out
Home Jump to start position

Keyboard dragging is also supported: press Alt + Enter to enter keyboard drag mode, use the arrow keys to move the marker, press Enter to finish dragging, and press Esc to cancel. This matters if you're navigating without a mouse or using assistive technology.

Viewing Real-Time Traffic Cameras

Traffic cameras are one of the real-time layers on the map. Once you've panned to your area of interest, enable the camera layer and select a camera marker to view its feed. The map is designed for situational awareness, so camera locations appear alongside other road data rather than in a separate list.

If you want the fastest read on a corridor, zoom out first to see which segments have camera coverage, then zoom in on the specific stretch you're driving.

Checking Lane Closures and Road Conditions

Lane closures and road conditions are separate map layers. Turn them on to see current restrictions overlaid on the same map you used to find your location. Because these are live layers, what you see reflects the map's current data — check again shortly before you travel rather than relying on a screenshot.

For highway conditions by phone, QuickMap points to 1-800-427-7623. The site also links to Winter Driving Tips and the National Weather Service, which are useful when conditions are weather-driven.

Map Operation Tips

  • Switch units: click the scale indicator to toggle between metric and imperial units.
  • Get the app: a "Get the app" link opens in a new tab for the mobile version.
  • Report a problem: a "Report map errors" link is available if a location or feature looks wrong.
  • Accessibility note: the application states it is being updated for digital accessibility and will continue to function while updates are in progress.

What QuickMap Is and Isn't

QuickMap is a California Department of Transportation situational awareness tool. It is built for viewing current traffic cameras, lane closures, and road conditions — not for turn-by-turn navigation or trip planning. Use it to confirm what's happening on a route right now, and use the phone line or linked weather resources when you need conditions without the map.
