How to Choose the Right Minecraft Version for Downloads on Shaders Mods

Updated

Match the version range in the download title to your exact Minecraft client version, and match the loader (Forge, Fabric, or Iris) to the one you already have installed. On Shaders Mods, resource titles list supported versions in a range such as "1.20, 1.19.4 → 1.18.2," which means the file covers everything from 1.18.2 up through 1.20, including the intermediate releases named. If your client version falls outside that range, or your loader doesn't match, the resource will usually fail to load or crash the game.

Step 1: Find your exact Minecraft version

Open the Minecraft launcher and check the version shown for the profile you actually play on. Write down the full number, not just the major release — 1.19.4 and 1.19.2 are different targets, and a pack built for one may not run on the other.

If you use a modded profile, note the loader too: Forge, Fabric, or Iris. Shaders Mods lists these as separate downloads (for example, "Fabric Loader 1.20, 1.19.4 → 1.18.2" and "Iris Shaders Mod 1.20, 1.19.4 → 1.18.2"), so the loader is part of what you're matching, not an afterthought.

Step 2: Read the version range in the title

Titles on Shaders Mods follow a consistent pattern. Take "AstraLex Shaders 1.20, 1.19.4 → 1.18.2":

Part of the title What it tells you
1.20, 1.19.4 Named versions that are explicitly supported
→ 1.18.2 The lower end of the supported range
AstraLex Shaders The resource name

So this file works on 1.18.2 through 1.20. The same format appears across the catalog — CaptTatsu's BSL, Sildur's, SEUS, Complementary, and Optifine HD all use "1.20, 1.19.4 → 1.18.2" style ranges, while older entries like Inventory Tweaks stop at "1.16.1 → 1.15.2."

When the range doesn't include your version

If your client is, say, 1.21 and the newest listed range tops out at 1.20, that resource isn't a match. Don't assume a nearby version will work — version mismatches are the most common cause of a resource failing to load or crashing on startup.

Step 3: Match the loader, not just the version

Two files can share the same version range and still be incompatible with your setup. Shaders Mods separates loader-specific downloads, so check which one your profile uses:

  • Forge — pick the Forge build if your modded profile runs on Forge.
  • Fabric — pick the Fabric Loader build for Fabric profiles.
  • Iris — Iris is the shader loader used with Fabric; if you run Iris, use the Iris Shaders Mod entry rather than a Forge shader mod.

Installing a Forge build on a Fabric profile (or the reverse) will not work even when the Minecraft version matches.

Quick decision checklist

  1. Note your exact client version (e.g., 1.19.4) and loader (Forge / Fabric / Iris).
  2. Find the resource on Shaders Mods.
  3. Confirm your version sits inside the title's range.
  4. Confirm the download matches your loader.
  5. Only then download and install.

If any of the first four checks fails, keep browsing for a resource whose title covers your version and loader — that's faster than troubleshooting a mismatch after install.
