How to Connect Avrae to Your Discord Server
Updated
You connect Avrae by opening its invite link, selecting your server from the dropdown menu, and confirming that four permissions are enabled: Read Messages, Send Messages, Embed Links, and Manage Messages. You need the "Manage Server" permission on that Discord server to add any bot, and Avrae must be allowed to read and post in the channels where you plan to use it. Once invited, Avrae is immediately available to run commands in those channels.
Before You Start
Two conditions determine whether the invite will work:
- Your Discord role. Only members with the Manage Server permission can authorize a bot. If you don't have it, ask a server admin to complete the invite or grant you the role.
- A target server. You must be a member of the server you're adding Avrae to, and it should appear in the invite dropdown.
Step-by-Step: Inviting Avrae
- Open the invite link. On avrae.io, the "Connect Avrae" section provides the invite. Select it to launch Discord's authorization page.
- Choose your server. Use the dropdown menu to pick the server you want Avrae in. If a server is missing, you either aren't a member or lack permission to add bots there.
- Confirm the permissions. Discord lists the permissions Avrae is requesting. The site specifies that Read Messages, Send Messages, Embed Links, and Manage Messages should be enabled. Leave them checked.
- Authorize. Submit the form. Discord returns you to the server, and Avrae appears in the member list.
- Verify it works. In a text channel, run a basic command. If Avrae responds, the connection is complete.
What Each Permission Does
| Permission | Why Avrae needs it |
|---|---|
| Read Messages | Lets Avrae see the commands you type |
| Send Messages | Lets Avrae post its replies and roll results |
| Embed Links | Lets Avrae format output as rich embeds, used by features like the initiative tracker |
| Manage Messages | Lets Avrae manage its own messages, such as cleaning up tracker output |
If any of these are missing, Avrae may join the server but fail to respond or display results correctly. You can adjust them afterward in Server Settings → Roles by editing Avrae's role, or per-channel in the channel's permission overrides.
After Connecting
Avrae is a Discord bot for playing D&D online, and its main features become usable as soon as it's in the server:
- Advanced dice roller — a custom dice parser that handles advantage, disadvantage, crits, keep/drop/reroll, exploding dice, and bounded dice.
- Character sheet integration — reads sheets from D&D Beyond, Dicecloud, or a Google Sheet, then auto-generates macros for attacks, ability checks, and saving throws.
- Initiative tracking — sorts combatants automatically and tracks HP, AC, resistance, and status effects, tying into the character sheet manager and 5e content.
Common Snags
- Server not in the dropdown. You're not a member, or you lack Manage Server. Have an admin run the invite instead.
- Avrae joins but stays silent. Check that Read Messages and Send Messages are enabled in that specific channel — channel-level overrides can block a bot even when server-level permissions allow it.
- Commands produce plain text instead of formatted cards. Embed Links is likely disabled; re-enable it in Avrae's role permissions.
- Tracker output clutters the channel. Manage Messages lets Avrae clean up after itself, so keep it enabled if you plan to use initiative tracking.
