How to Contribute to or Edit Pages on IFWiki

Updated

To edit IFWiki, create an account or log in first, then use the "Edit with form" action on an existing page or the relevant "Add …" link for a new entry. Before logging in, reset your password: the site states its wiki server was recently hacked and, while it believes password hashes were not compromised, it requires a password reset at Special:PasswordReset as a precaution (see IFWiki:September 2026 security incident for details).

Before you start

  • Account: Editing is tied to a logged-in account; the site provides "Create account" and "Log in" links in its personal tools menu.
  • Password reset: If you already had an account, complete the reset at Special:PasswordReset before attempting to log in.
  • Where to learn the ground rules: The navigation menu links "About IFWiki" and "How to edit IFWiki"; read these before making substantive changes.

Adding a new entry

IFWiki organizes its content into categories, and each has its own add link in the navigation menu:

Category Add link What it covers
Games Add game Individual interactive fiction works
Events Add event Competitions, jams, conferences, meetings, other events
Software Add software Interpreters, authoring systems, utilities, libraries
Architecture Add architecture Technical architecture topics

After adding a game, you can also contribute cover art through the "Cover art gallery" and browse existing entries via "Browse games," "Browse software," and similar pages.

Editing an existing page

  1. Open the page you want to change.
  2. Choose Actions → Edit with form — this is the route IFWiki itself recommends for structured edits, such as assigning a game to a literary genre.
  3. Make your change and save.

For general page edits, the standard "Edit" and "View history" tabs are available on each page, along with "What links here" and "Permanent link" under Tools.

Current editing projects

IFWiki highlights focused projects that need volunteer effort:

  • Adding source code URLs to game pages — launched 30 April 2026, inspired by Source Code Amnesty Day 2026. See IFWiki:Adding source code URLs to game pages for instructions.
  • New literary genres — as of 28 November 2025, editors are asked to add game pages to the new "War" and "Wordplay" genres using Actions → Edit with form on existing pages.

Practical tips

  • Use "Recent changes" and "Random page" to see what others are working on and how similar entries are structured.
  • Check "Discussion" pages when you are unsure about a change; each page and the main navigation have one.
  • The calendar accepts event submissions ("Add an event"), so upcoming competitions and meetings can be listed alongside the existing ones such as IFComp 2026 and ECTOCOMP 2026.

Contributing is therefore a two-step habit: get a working account, then either add a new entry through the category links or refine an existing page with the form-based editor.
