How to Customize a Backing Track on Karaoke Version

Updated

Karaoke Version's Custom Backing Track tool lets you remix a track before buying it: change the key, adjust individual instrument tracks, add or remove lead and backing vocals, then download the result as an MP3. It costs $2.99 per custom track. This is the option to use when a stock instrumental doesn't fit your voice or arrangement — if you just want a ready-made instrumental or vocal track, the cheaper fixed versions ($1.99) are enough.

What you can change

The customizer is built around four adjustable elements:

  • Key — transpose the song to fit your vocal range.
  • Instrument tracks — adjust the levels of individual parts such as guitar, drums, bass, and piano.
  • Lead vocals — add or remove them.
  • Backing vocals — add or remove them.

The result is your own remix of the original-sounding track, delivered as an MP3.

Step by step

  1. Search for the song or artist. Use the search bar ("Search a song, artist...") or Advanced Search if you need to narrow results.
  2. Open the track page for the song you want.
  3. Choose the Custom Backing Track option rather than a fixed Vocal Backing Track or Instrumental Version.
  4. Set your key to match your range.
  5. Adjust the instrument tracks you want louder, quieter, or removed.
  6. Decide on vocals — keep or drop the lead and/or backing vocals.
  7. Preview the mix to confirm it sounds right before committing.
  8. Download the MP3 once you're satisfied.

Custom vs. the fixed versions

Option Price What you get When to choose it
Custom Backing Track $2.99 Change key, adjust instrument tracks, add/remove lead and backing vocals Your key or arrangement differs from the original
Vocal Backing Track $1.99 Keep only lead and/or backing vocals, or instrumental only You just need a vocal or instrumental split
Instrumental Version $1.99 Ready-made instrumental The original key and arrangement already work for you
Video Karaoke $2.99 Karaoke video You want a video format, not just audio
Custom Karaoke $9.99 Customized karaoke You want full customization in a karaoke format

The key difference in operation: fixed versions are one-click downloads, while the Custom Backing Track requires you to work through the key, track, and vocal settings before the download is generated.

Common snags

  • You can't find a song. The catalog is exclusive and "constantly evolving," so not every track exists yet — the site invites users to help choose what gets produced next.
  • The customizer feels unnecessary. If the original key already suits you and you don't need to isolate parts, skip it and buy the $1.99 version instead.
  • You want video, not audio. Custom Backing Track outputs MP3 only; use Video Karaoke or Custom Karaoke for video.

Before you start

You'll need an account — the site shows Log In, Sign Up, and password recovery options, so plan on registering rather than downloading as a guest. Have your target key in mind before you open the customizer; that's the setting most likely to need a second pass.
