How to Download and Install 4DO Emulator
Updated
4DO is an open-source, low-level Panasonic 3DO emulator for PC, Linux, and Android, based on the FreeDO source code. To get it, go to the download page on fourdo.com and choose either the Windows installer (4DO_1.3.2.4_Install.exe) or the portable zip file (4DO_1.3.2.4.zip). The installer is the simplest option for most Windows users; the zip is better if you want to run the emulator without a formal installation. Note that the Android port is distributed separately and has been flagged as needing testing, so treat it as less settled than the desktop builds.
Download Options
The current release listed on the site is 4DO Emulator 1.3.2.4. Two download formats are offered:
| Format | File | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Installer | 4DO_1.3.2.4_Install.exe |
Standard Windows setup, guided install |
| Zip archive | 4DO_1.3.2.4.zip |
Portable use, no install, manual placement |
Both are available from the download page linked on fourdo.com ("4DO Downloads"). The site does not state a price for either file, so check the page itself for any current terms before downloading.
Installing on Windows (Installer)
- Download
4DO_1.3.2.4_Install.exefrom the download page. - Run the executable. Windows will launch the setup wizard.
- Follow the prompts to choose an install location and complete setup.
- Launch 4DO from the Start menu or the install folder.
Expected result: 4DO opens with its emulator interface, ready for you to point it at a 3DO BIOS and game images.
Using the Zip Version
- Download
4DO_1.3.2.4.zip. - Extract the archive to a folder of your choice.
- Run the 4DO executable inside the extracted folder.
This avoids writing to system locations, which is useful if you want to keep the emulator on a USB drive or test multiple versions side by side.
What You Get in 1.3.2.4
The 1.3.2.4 release is worth knowing about because it fixes several long-standing problems:
- Freeze fixes in the core Clio handling, affecting the 3DO Interactive Sampler CDs 1–4, the Panasonic REAL 3DO Interactive Multiplayer Sampler, Twisted - The Game Show (long boot time), and Killing Time 2.2 Alpha.
- Graphical fixes: Microcosm start screens are fixed and the game is now described as 100% playable; Alone In The Dark fonts are readable, including text on books; Dinopark Tycoon received minor graphical fixes but is not yet 100%.
- New "Scale Mode" option that enlarges the image, matching NTSC console output.
- Anvil support, including emulation of the Anvil chip, which is needed to run some European-region games.
Common Snags
- Android is a separate story. The site lists an Android port but explicitly asks for testing help, so don't assume the desktop install steps apply. Look for the Android-specific build and instructions.
- A BIOS is generally required. 4DO is a low-level emulator; you'll need a 3DO BIOS file to run games. The download page covers the emulator itself, not BIOS files.
- Version drift. The site's release history jumps through 1.3.2.0–1.3.2.4, so confirm you're grabbing the newest file rather than an older mirror.
