How to Download and Install a VSIX File from VsixHub

Updated

VsixHub lists free VS Code extensions and gives each one a Download VSIX link on its detail page. To install, download the .vsix file and then load it into VS Code manually — either through the Extensions view's "Install from VSIX..." option or the code --install-extension command. This works for any extension listed on the site, including the ones shown under "More Free Extensions for Visual Studio Code (.VSIX File)" such as Apex Replay Debugger, Slint, or Markdown 公文.

What a VSIX file is

A .vsix file is the packaged form of a VS Code extension. The VS Code Marketplace normally handles download and installation for you, but a VSIX file lets you install an extension directly — useful when you want a specific version, an offline install, or an extension you found outside the built-in Marketplace search.

VsixHub's own description frames the site as a source of "Best Free Extensions for VS Code," and its listings are organized around downloadable VSIX files rather than in-editor installation.

Step 1: Find the extension and download it

  1. Open the extension's detail page on VsixHub. Listings appear under sections like Trending Extensions for VS Code, Most Installed Extensions for VS Code, and More Free Extensions for Visual Studio Code (.VSIX File).
  2. Confirm you have the right extension by checking its name, version, and category. Categories on the site include Themes, Programming Languages, Linters, Debuggers, Visualization, Snippets, Keymaps, Formatters, and Extension Packs.
  3. Click Download VSIX. The file saves to your computer.
  4. If you need a different release, use the Version History link next to the download to see other versions before choosing one.

Each listing shows the version number and an "Updated" date, for example:

Extension Version Category Updated
Apex Replay Debugger 67.18.2 Debuggers September 19, 2026
Slint 1.18.0 Programming Languages September 16, 2026
Wireless Debug 1.1.4 Other September 18, 2026
Markdown 公文 2.3.2 Visualization September 18, 2026

Step 2: Install the VSIX file in VS Code

You have two ways to do this.

Option A: From the Extensions view

  1. Open VS Code.
  2. Open the Extensions view (the square icon in the Activity Bar, or the Extensions command from the Command Palette).
  3. Open the More Actions (...) menu at the top of the Extensions view.
  4. Choose Install from VSIX...
  5. Select the .vsix file you downloaded.
  6. VS Code installs the extension and shows a confirmation. Reload the window if prompted.

Expected result: the extension appears in your installed extensions list and its features become active.

Option B: From the command line

code --install-extension /path/to/extension.vsix

Replace /path/to/extension.vsix with the actual file path. The code command must be available on your PATH (in VS Code you can enable it via the Command Palette's "Shell Command: Install 'code' command in PATH").

Expected result: the terminal prints a success message and the extension is installed.

Common snags

  • "Extension is not compatible" or install fails. The VSIX may target a different VS Code version or a different editor (some VSIX files are built for forks). Check the extension's stated compatibility before downloading.
  • The code command isn't found. The shell command isn't on your PATH yet — install it from the Command Palette first, or use Option A instead.
  • You installed an older version by mistake. Use Version History on the VsixHub page to grab the release you actually want, then reinstall.
  • Nothing seems to happen after install. Some extensions need a window reload or a specific file type open before their features appear.

When to use this route

Downloading a VSIX from VsixHub makes sense when you want a pinned version, an offline install, or an extension you located through the site's trending and most-installed lists. If you just want the latest release and don't care about the source, installing directly from within VS Code's own Extensions view is simpler.
