How to Find a Buddhist Centre or Temple Through the Buddhist Council of NSW
Updated
The Buddhist Council of NSW offers a searchable online directory of member organisations, and you can filter it by location, tradition or culture. It covers places of worship, retreat centres, educational institutions and professional organisations across New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. Use it when you want a centre near you, one in a particular tradition, or one serving a particular cultural community.
What the directory includes
The Council describes its members as places of worship, retreat centres, educational institutions and professional organisations in NSW and the ACT. That means a search can return more than temples — you may also find retreat venues, Buddhist schools or organisations offering services such as chaplaincy.
The directory is the Council's own list of member organisations, so it reflects groups affiliated with the Council rather than every Buddhist group in the two jurisdictions. If a centre you know of doesn't appear, it may simply not be a member.
How to search
- Go to the Buddhist Council of NSW website (buddhistcouncil.org).
- Find the "Find a Buddhist centre" entry, which the site describes as a search of the directory of member organisations by location, tradition or culture.
- Choose your filter — start with location if proximity matters most, or with tradition or culture if that is your priority.
- Open the results and check the organisation's details before visiting.
Expected result: a shortlist of member organisations matching your filters, with enough information to decide which to contact or visit.
Choosing filters that fit your goal
| Your goal | Best first filter | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Attend in-person near home or work | Location | Narrows results to centres you can realistically reach |
| Practise in a specific tradition | Tradition | Matches the style of practice and teaching you want |
| Connect with a particular community | Culture | Finds centres serving your language or cultural background |
| Attend a retreat | None — browse, then check type | Retreat centres are members, but the directory is not a retreat-only listing |
If your first search returns too few results, drop one filter rather than all of them — for example, search by tradition across the whole of NSW and ACT, then check which results are reachable.
Beyond the directory
The Council's site also points to other ways to engage with the community it connects:
- Events: meditation sessions, retreats and festivals run by member organisations are promoted on the site.
- New to Buddhism: introductory resources on practising Buddhism, meditation and Buddhist protocols, plus an "Ask a Buddhist" feature.
- Volunteering: use your skills to support the community.
- Chaplaincy: the Council trains and appoints Buddhist chaplains for multi-faith teams in NSW hospitals and prisons.
- Schools: it manages a Special Religious Education program supporting volunteer teachers of Buddhism in NSW public schools.
Common sticking points
- No results for a small tradition or remote area. Try searching by tradition alone, or widen from a town to the whole state.
- A centre you expected isn't listed. The directory covers member organisations; contact the Council to ask about membership or for a pointer.
- Unclear which tradition a centre follows. Check the organisation's own listing and website before travelling, since the directory is a starting point rather than a detailed profile of each centre.
