How to Find a Puppy Through the American Kennel Club
Updated
You can start a puppy search on akc.org through the Find a Puppy tool, which appears in the site's main navigation alongside Event Search, Register, Shop, AKC TV, and Sign In. The tool is a directory that connects you with puppies and breeders; it is not an adoption service, and the AKC does not itself sell or place dogs. Use it when you want a specific breed from a breeder, and expect to do your own verification of health testing, temperament, and living conditions before committing.
Where the Find a Puppy Entry Point Sits
The AKC homepage lists Find a Puppy as a top-level action, next to Event Search, Register, Shop, AKC TV, and Sign In. That placement tells you the intended flow: browse or search a breed, then move toward a breeder listing. The same navigation includes a breed selector ("Search for a Breed") that covers the full recognized breed list, from Affenpinscher and Afghan Hound through to Hokkaido and beyond. If you already know the breed you want, the breed selector is the faster route; if you are still deciding, browse the list first.
How to Use the Breed Selector and Find a Puppy
- Open akc.org and locate the breed search or Find a Puppy link in the main menu.
- If you are undecided, scan the breed list. It is alphabetical and includes both well-known breeds (Beagle, Boxer, Golden Retriever) and less common ones (Azawakh, Cirneco dell'Etna, Hamiltonstovare).
- Select a breed to reach its page. Breed pages carry the AKC's breed description, which is the site's stated area of expertise: breed, health, and training information.
- From the breed context, follow the puppy or breeder listings to see available litters and contact details.
- Contact breeders directly. The AKC listing is a starting point, not a guarantee of availability, price, or health status.
The exact filters you see depend on the listing, but expect to narrow by breed at minimum, and often by location or breeder. The site does not publish a single fixed set of filters across every breed, so treat each breed's listing page as its own search.
What the AKC Adds Beyond a Listing
The AKC describes itself as the recognized expert in breed, health, and training information for dogs, and the site reflects that in three ways that matter when you are choosing a puppy:
- Breed information — each breed has a profile covering traits and care needs, useful for matching a breed to your household before you contact anyone.
- Registration — the homepage invites visitors to "Declare Your Love and Register with the AKC," which is how dogs and litters are recorded with the organization. Registration is a record-keeping function; it is not a health or quality certification.
- Health and training content — the site's stated focus areas, which you can use to prepare questions for a breeder.
A breeder's presence in an AKC-connected listing is not the same as an AKC endorsement of that breeder. The organization registers dogs; it does not inspect every kennel.
What to Verify Yourself Before You Commit
Because the AKC listing is a directory, the due diligence is yours. Before paying a deposit or picking up a puppy, confirm:
- Health testing — ask for results of breed-relevant tests (for example, hip and eye evaluations where applicable) and check whether the results are verifiable through the relevant registry.
- Source and conditions — ask to see where the puppy was raised, meet the dam, and get straight answers about how many litters the breeder produces.
- Contract and terms — read what the breeder guarantees, what happens if a health issue appears, and whether the puppy can be returned.
- Registration paperwork — confirm what registration documents you will receive and when.
- Price and payment — the AKC site materials do not state puppy prices; any figure comes from the individual breeder, so get it in writing.
If a listing pressures you to pay before you can verify any of the above, that is a reason to slow down, not a reason to trust the AKC name on the page.
Other AKC Site Features You Will Encounter
The homepage also surfaces Event Search, Shop, AKC TV, Top Stories, Latest Stories, and AKC Cares. Event Search is useful if you want to meet breeds and breeders in person at shows or trials before choosing — often a better filter than a listing alone. The site also links to newsletter subscriptions and to AKC pet insurance plans; these are separate services, and the insurance link is a referral to a partner site rather than part of the puppy search itself.
