How to Find a Website or Online Tool on IndexPage
Updated
To find a site on IndexPage, use the full-directory search bar with a name, domain, subject, or task (for example, "compare password managers" or "find research papers"), or browse the 23 categories and open one to see all of its focused topics. The directory currently indexes 45,204 websites across 316 focused topics, so the fastest route depends on whether you already know what you're looking for.
Search the full directory
The search bar sits on the homepage under the heading "Find the right website, fast." It accepts four kinds of input:
- A name — a site or brand you already have in mind
- A domain — if you know the address but not the listing
- A subject — a broad area such as privacy or research
- A task — what you want to accomplish, phrased as an action
Task-based queries tend to work best when you don't know any specific site. The page itself gives "compare password managers" and "find research papers" as examples, which shows the search is designed to match intent rather than exact titles.
Expected result: a set of matching listings. Each listing pairs a site with a clear description, so you can judge relevance before clicking through.
Common snag: if a task query returns too much, add a qualifier — a platform, a format, or a narrower subject — rather than scrolling the whole result set.
Browse by category
If you'd rather explore than search, the "Explore by category" section is the entry point. The directory is organized into 23 categories, each holding a set of focused topics.
Each category card shows up to nine useful starting points in a compact grid. That preview is deliberately partial: to see every topic in a category, open the category itself.
Two examples of how the structure works:
| Category | Topics | What you'll find inside |
|---|---|---|
| Search & Discovery | 12 topics | Search Engines & Tools (230 listings), Metasearch & Multi-Search (60), Advanced Search (7), Image & Media Search (57), News Search (53), File & Open Directory Search (13), plus Web Discovery & Directories, General Search Engines, and Product & Shopping Search |
| Software & Online Tools | 30 topics | Productivity & Business Tools (46), PDF & Document Tools (55), Browser Tools & Extensions (353), File Utilities (190), Writing Tools, and more |
The topic counts matter: a category with 353 listings in one topic is a different browsing experience from one with 7. Check the number next to a topic before diving in.
Choose search or browse
- Use search when you can name the site, the domain, or state your task in a few words. This is the shortest path.
- Use browse when you're surveying a field — for instance, deciding which kind of search tool fits a research workflow — and want to see the topic structure before committing.
- Combine them when a category is large: open the category to learn its topic names, then search a topic name to jump straight to matching listings.
Verify before you commit
IndexPage is a curated directory, not a review site. Listings carry descriptions, not ratings or test results. Before relying on a tool for real work, open the site itself and confirm it does what the listing says — especially for anything involving accounts, files, or privacy. The directory's own framing is about exploring "with more freedom, privacy, and choice," which points to discovery and comparison rather than endorsement.
