How to Find and Compare 3D Printing Filaments on SpoolScout
Updated
SpoolScout is a filament comparison tool that lets you filter spools by color, price, weight, diameter, and a set of mechanical and thermal properties, then jump to a retailer to buy. It works best when you already know one or two constraints (a color, a material type, or a strength target) and want to see which spools meet them side by side. The site earns commissions on purchases made through its links, so the "Buy on Amazon" buttons are affiliate links rather than direct storefronts.
What you can filter and compare
The filter panel on the main page exposes these fields:
| Field | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Product | Filament name/line (e.g. Overture PLA Plus) |
| Color | Spool color |
| Price/kg | Normalized price so different spool sizes are comparable |
| Price | Total listing price |
| Weight (kg) | Spool net weight |
| Diameter (mm) | 1.75 mm or 2.85 mm |
| Density (g/cm³) | Material density |
| MFI (g/10min) | Melt flow index — flow behavior during printing |
| Bending modulus (MPa) | Stiffness |
| Bending strength (MPa) | Load before bending failure |
| Impact strength (kJ/m²) | Toughness / resistance to sudden loads |
| Print info (°C) | Recommended nozzle temperature range |
There's also a Clear button to reset filters and an Advanced toggle for the less common numeric fields.
Step-by-step: narrowing to a shortlist
- Start with one hard constraint. Pick the color or the material you need. Filtering on color first removes the most rows fastest.
- Set a price/kg ceiling. Use Price/kg rather than Price, because a 2 kg spool and a 1 kg spool of the same filament have different totals but the same per-kg cost. This keeps large and small spools on equal footing.
- Add a mechanical threshold if the part is functional. For a bracket or a part that flexes, set a minimum Bending strength or Impact strength. For a stiff, dimensionally stable part, raise Bending modulus instead.
- Check the print temperature range. Confirm the listed range (for example 190–230 °C) fits your hotend's comfortable operating window before you commit.
- Compare the remaining rows. The table shows each spool's full property set, so you can read density, MFI, and the mechanical values across candidates without opening separate pages.
- Follow the affiliate link. Click Buy on Amazon on the row you want. The link carries SpoolScout's commission; the price and availability you see are Amazon's.
Reading the property columns
Using the Overture rows visible on the page as a concrete example:
- Overture PLA Plus (Black, White, Digital Blue, Orange) lists density 1.21 g/cm³, MFI 7.3 g/10 min, bending modulus 2394 MPa, bending strength 61.4 MPa, print range 190–230 °C.
- Overture PLA (Black, White, Blue, Brown, Cement Gray, Chocolate, Mixed) lists the same density 1.21 g/cm³ but MFI 9 g/10 min, bending modulus 3279 MPa, bending strength 84.9 MPa, print range 190–220 °C.
Two things worth noting from that comparison:
- Higher modulus and strength don't automatically mean "better." The standard PLA is stiffer and stronger on paper, while PLA Plus has a lower MFI and a wider temperature window. Which one suits you depends on whether the part needs rigidity or easier flow and a broader print range.
- MFI is a flow indicator, not a quality score. A higher MFI means the melt flows more readily; it interacts with your print temperature and speed choices rather than being a standalone ranking.
Comparing spool sizes
The same filament appears in multiple weights — for example Overture PLA Plus in 1 kg and 2 kg, and Overture PLA in 1 kg, 2 kg, 3 kg, and a 6 kg mixed pack. Because the property columns are identical across those rows, the only real differences are:
- Price/kg — the normalized figure that tells you whether the bulk spool is actually cheaper per kilogram.
- Total price and weight — what you pay and how much material you store.
If two rows share the same color and properties but differ in weight, sort or scan by Price/kg to see whether the larger spool is worth the storage and upfront cost.
Common snags
- "Unavailable" rows. Some listings show as unavailable; the affiliate link may still point to a product page, but you can't buy at that moment. Filter or scan past them.
- Missing values. Not every spool has every property filled in (impact strength is blank for the Overture rows above). Treat blanks as unknown, not as zero.
- Affiliate links change nothing about your price. The commission comes out of the retailer's side; you pay the listed Amazon price.
- Property values are per-listing, not universal. The same brand and color can differ between product lines, so compare the specific row, not the brand name.
If you only need a quick answer, filter by color and price/kg, then read bending strength and print temperature on the surviving rows — that covers most everyday filament decisions.
