How to Find Travel Information on Wikivoyage

Updated

Start with the search box on the Wikivoyage home page if you already know your destination, or use the language lists if you want to browse in a specific language. Wikivoyage is a free travel guide available in many languages, and the English version alone has 34,000+ pages, so the main task is narrowing that collection down to the place or topic you need.

Search for a destination

The fastest route is the search field on the home page.

  1. Type the place name into the search box.
  2. Submit the search.
  3. Open the destination article from the results.

Expected result: you land on a page for that city, region, or country rather than a general index. If the exact name is ambiguous, try the wider area first (for example, the country or region) and follow links down to the specific town.

Browse by language

Wikivoyage organizes its home page around language versions, grouped by size. You can read in your preferred language instead of switching to English.

Group shown on the home page Languages listed
10,000+ pages Deutsch, English, Français, Italiano, Polski
Türkçe

There is also an "Other languages" entry for versions outside these groups. Pick the language version first, then search or browse within it, because page coverage differs between languages.

Explore by topic and links

If you do not have a destination in mind, work from a broad article and follow its internal links.

  • Open a country or region article, then follow links to cities, districts, and nearby destinations.
  • Use links inside an article to move between related topics such as transport, food, or activities.
  • Treat each article as a starting point: the useful detail is usually one or two links deeper.

Common sticking points

  • No results for a small place. Search the nearest larger town or the region, then look for the smaller place linked from there.
  • Thin coverage in your language. Switch to a larger language version; the home page groups show which versions have the most pages.
  • Wrong page type. A search can return a region or a general topic instead of the city you want. Check the page title before reading further.

What you get

Wikivoyage is a free travel guide, and its home page presents the project as "Free travel guide" with page counts per language. Use search when you know the destination, the language lists when language matters most, and internal links when you want to discover places around a starting point.
