How to Find Your Own Screams or Contact JUST SCREAM!

Updated

JUST SCREAM! stopped recording new screams on January 21, 2021, but the archive is still online and you can still retrieve your own recordings. To find your screams, email [email protected] with your phone number and you'll receive a link to your own screams. The same address handles general comments and questions. Below is what you can still do, what you can't, and how the project handles your data.

Can I still call and scream right now?

No. The original Just Scream project closed on January 21, 2021, and the site states that new ways to scream are coming soon. What remains is an archive: between October 2020 and January 2021, callers from around the world left over 150,000 recordings, and you can listen to everything collected.

If your goal is simply to scream into a phone line, that option isn't available at the moment. If your goal is to hear the archive or recover something you recorded during the project window, you can still do both.

How to find your own screams

  1. Email [email protected].
  2. Include the phone number you used when you called.
  3. Wait for a reply with a link to your own screams.

The phone number is the key that ties you to your recordings, which is why the request has to include it. If you called from more than one number, send each one separately.

What happens to your phone number

The project states that it can see your phone number when you call but will never share it with anyone. The Privacy Policy on the site has the full details. This matters if you're deciding whether to request your recordings: the retrieval process depends on the project matching your number to your calls, so your number is already part of how the archive works.

Who made this

JUST SCREAM! was made by Chris Gollmar, described on the site as a teacher, occasional artist, and generally rather quiet person. The project's own framing is deliberately simple: call, wait for the beep, scream, and hang up. People screamed with joy, rage, frustration, loneliness, and everything else there is to scream about.

Quick answers

Is it free? The site doesn't state pricing, so treat cost as unconfirmed rather than assuming it's free.

Can I do this in public? The site's own answer is yes, please do this in public — except perhaps not in a crowded theater.

Why would anyone call? To scream. Being unhappy, terrified, frustrated, or elated are all described as perfectly good reasons.
