How to Fix Common Issues After Downgrading GTA with GTA Downgraders

Updated

Most post-downgrade problems come from two sources: skipping the recommended patches and launching the game through the wrong executable. If your mouse doesn't work, you see an "insert CD2" message, or the game simply won't start, the fix is usually to install SilentPatch (and Cleo where needed) and to launch via the game's own .exe rather than the Rockstar Games Launcher or Steam.

The core rule: launch the right executable

GTA Downgraders' instructions are consistent across all three classic titles — after downgrading, you must not use the RGSC launcher or Steam to start the game. Launch the game's own executable instead:

Game Launch this Not this
GTA III GTA3.exe RGSC launcher
Vice City GTA-VC.exe RGSC launcher
San Andreas GTA-sa.exe RGSC launcher or Steam

If you launch through the launcher, you're effectively undoing the downgrade, which is why problems reappear.

Mouse not working (San Andreas)

This is the most commonly flagged compatibility issue. GTA Downgraders recommends installing SilentPatch to get rid of compatibility issues like the mouse not working. The same recommendation applies whether you downgraded from RGSC/Steam to v1 or from v2 to v1.

"Insert CD2" message (GTA III and Vice City)

If the game asks for CD2, install SilentPatch and/or Cleo to get rid of the message. Either is sufficient for this specific prompt.

Verifying the downgrade actually applied

The install step itself is the same for every game:

  1. Extract the downgrader files to your GTA directory.
  2. Run install.bat.
  3. Wait until the window disappears — it blinks briefly for a second, which is expected, not a failure.

If the window closes that quickly and you launched via the correct .exe, the downgrade applied. If issues persist, the cause is almost always a missing patch or the wrong launcher.

Recommended mods for GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas

GTA Downgraders lists these as recommended across all three games:

  • Widescreen Fixes — for modern display resolutions
  • Ginput — controller support
  • SkyGFX — graphics restoration

Install these after the downgrade and after SilentPatch for the cleanest result.

Restoring GTA IV Complete Edition radio stations

This is a separate tool with its own steps:

  1. Extract all files from GTAIVCERADIORESTOREINSTALLER.zip to an empty folder.
  2. Run IVCERadioRestorer.exe.
  3. Follow the installer's instructions.
  4. Launch via Steam or the Rockstar Games Launcher.

Note that Fusion Fix is required for this tool, and it can be downloaded automatically through the installer. Unlike the classic trilogy, GTA IV radio restoration is launched through Steam or RGSC — don't apply the classic-game launch rule here.

Quick troubleshooting checklist

  • Mouse not working → install SilentPatch
  • "Insert CD2" prompt → install SilentPatch and/or Cleo
  • Game won't start or behaves like the un-downgraded version → you launched via RGSC/Steam; use GTA3.exe, GTA-VC.exe, or GTA-sa.exe
  • Downgrade seems not to have applied → confirm install.bat ran to completion and files were extracted into the GTA directory itself
