How to Get Heritage News from The Heritage Alliance
Updated
The Heritage Alliance publishes Heritage Update, a fortnightly newsletter and sector digest that covers developments from Government, Parliament and across the heritage sector. Anyone can receive it by signing up to have it sent to their inbox. If you also want to share your own news, jobs, courses or events in the newsletter, the terms differ: member organisations can do so free in every issue, while non-members are charged £165 per issue.
Receiving Heritage Update
The newsletter is the Alliance's main channel for sector news. The site describes it as a fortnightly digest "showcasing the latest developments from Government, Parliament and across the sector," and invites readers to "get the latest heritage news sent to your inbox."
- Frequency: every two weeks.
- Content: policy and parliamentary developments, plus news from across the heritage sector.
- Who it's for: anyone tracking English heritage policy or sector activity — members and non-members alike.
To start receiving it, use the newsletter sign-up on The Heritage Alliance website. The site does not publish a separate subscription fee for receiving Heritage Update, so treat receipt as the default offer and confirm any conditions at sign-up.
Sharing Your Own News in Heritage Update
If you want your organisation's updates included in the digest, the route depends on membership:
| Your status | Cost to submit news, jobs, courses or events | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Heritage Alliance member | Free | Every issue |
| Non-member | £165 per issue | Per issue paid |
Members are described as being "at the heart of everything we do," and the free listing in every issue is one of the practical benefits of joining. For non-members, the per-issue charge is the stated rate; the site does not indicate any bulk or series discount, so plan submissions issue by issue.
Other Ways to Follow the Alliance's Work
Beyond the newsletter, the site's news section carries announcements from the Alliance itself — for example, recruitment posts such as a Policy Officer role at £31,000 pro rata (17.5 hours per week, one-year contract with potential to extend) and an Office & Operations Assistant role at £27,000 pro rata on the same hours and term. It also publishes event write-ups, such as the Heritage Day 2026 reflections and resources under the theme #HeritageConnects, held on 4 March 2026 at One Great George Street.
For digital skills specifically, Heritage Digital is a UK-wide free support programme funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and coordinated by The Heritage Alliance, offering training and resources through consortium partners. That is a separate channel from Heritage Update and useful if your interest is capability-building rather than news.
Deciding Which Route Fits
- Just keeping informed: sign up for Heritage Update; it costs nothing stated on the site to receive.
- Occasionally promoting events or vacancies: the £165 per-issue non-member rate applies; budget per submission.
- Regularly sharing news and wanting a voice in advocacy: membership removes the per-issue cost and places your organisation among the 200-plus groups the Alliance represents, whose members collectively represent over 8 million volunteers, trustees and staff.
If your main goal is policy awareness, the newsletter alone will serve you. If your goal is visibility for your own work alongside that awareness, compare the annual cost of membership against the number of issues you would pay for as a non-member.
