How to Get Into a UniSQ Degree Through a Pathway Program

Updated

A UniSQ pathway program is designed for people who don't yet meet the entry requirements for their target degree. You complete the pathway, then use it to move into the degree you want. The official site presents pathways as one of several study options alongside double degrees and short courses, and it directs anyone unsure about eligibility to free career advice with a Career Advisor or a conversation with a Degree Advisor before applying.

Who a pathway is for

Use a pathway if you want a UniSQ degree but your current qualifications, grades, or study history don't meet direct entry. The site frames it simply: "Discover how you can get into your dream degree with a pathway program." That wording signals the pathway is a route into the degree, not a separate qualification goal in its own right.

A pathway is probably not your best first step if you already meet direct entry requirements (apply directly instead), if you mainly want to sample a subject without committing to a degree (look at short courses), or if you want two degrees at once (that's a double degree).

Pathway vs. the other study options

UniSQ lists four study routes on its homepage. They answer different questions:

Option What it's for Choose it when
Pathway Gaining entry to a degree you don't yet qualify for You have a target degree but don't meet entry requirements
Double degree Studying two degrees together You want two qualifications and can meet entry requirements for both
Short course Focused, shorter study You want a specific skill or a low-commitment trial of study
Postgraduate study Advancing or changing careers You already hold an undergraduate qualification

The site also points postgraduate study at people aiming to "get promoted or change industries," which is a different purpose from a pathway into a first degree.

Steps to take

  1. Name your target degree. Browse "Find a degree" by field — Arts and Communication, Aviation, Business, Education and Teaching, Engineering and Surveying, Health, Information Technology, Law, Sciences and Agriculture — and note the degree you want. The pathway only makes sense relative to a destination.
  2. Check whether you meet direct entry. If you do, skip the pathway and go to Apply.
  3. Ask about the right pathway for that degree. The site doesn't publish a pathway-to-degree mapping, so confirm with a Degree Advisor (phone +61 7 4631 5316, free call 1800 269 500, Monday–Friday 9.00 am–5.00 pm AEST) or a Career Advisor via the free career advice booking. Ask specifically: which pathway leads into my degree, and what completion standard do I need?
  4. Confirm study location and mode. UniSQ teaches at Toowoomba, Springfield, Ipswich, UniSQ Brisbane, and Online. Ask whether your pathway is available at your preferred location or online — this affects both logistics and cost of living.
  5. Apply or enquire. Use the Apply or Enquire links on the site once you know your route.
  6. Verify your progression. After completing the pathway, confirm with UniSQ that you've met the requirements before assuming you're admitted to the degree.

Practical points worth checking early

  • Credit and time. Ask whether pathway study counts toward your degree and how long the pathway plus degree will take in total. This isn't stated on the homepage, so get it in writing from an advisor.
  • Fees and funding. The site gives no pricing signals for pathways. Ask about fees, FEE-HELP eligibility if relevant to you, and any scholarships before you commit.
  • Support while studying. Current students can reach iconnect on +61 7 4631 2285 or 1800 007 252, Monday–Friday 9.00 am–4.00 pm AEST, at all three campuses.
  • Timing. Entry requirements and intakes change; treat any advice from a year ago as a starting point only.

Common sticking points

The most frequent mistake is choosing a pathway before confirming it feeds the specific degree you want — pathways are not always interchangeable. The second is assuming completion guarantees admission; confirm the required standard in advance. The third is overlooking location: an online or Ipswich pathway may suit you better than Toowoomba, and the site treats Online as a full study location, not a supplement.

If you're still deciding between a pathway and another route, the free career advice service is the lowest-risk first move — it's explicitly offered to help you "discover your next move" before you apply.
