How to Get Started with CrossTrainer in Four Steps
Updated
CrossTrainer guides new users through a four-step onboarding flow: set a goal by weighing in and choosing gain, lose, or maintain; log workouts set by set plus cardio sessions; track meals for calories, macros, and micronutrients; then review trends in the Progress module. The app is free to download on iOS and Android, and a separate Premium tier exists — check the Premium page for what it includes before assuming any feature is free.
Step 1: Set Your Goal
Start by weighing in and choosing your target: gain, lose, or maintain. CrossTrainer builds your daily calorie and activity goals around that choice, so the rest of your routine is structured toward the result you want.
What you need: a current body weight and a clear direction (gain, lose, or maintain).
What happens: the app calculates personalized daily calorie and macro targets. These become the baseline that Steps 2–4 measure against.
Checkpoint: open the Daily Dashboard and confirm your calorie and macro targets appear. If they don't, your goal selection likely didn't save — revisit the goal step.
Step 2: Log Your Training
Use the Workout Builder to create custom workouts with sets, reps, rest, and progressive overload, then log them set by set as you train. For cardio, record runs, rides, and walks with distance, pace, heart rate, and a live GPS route.
What you need: your planned exercises (or just start logging as you go) and, for GPS tracking, location permission enabled on your phone.
What happens: strength work is captured set by set; cardio sessions are captured with route and pace data. Everything lands in one training history.
Checkpoint: after your first session, confirm it appears on the Daily Dashboard and calendar. For GPS runs, verify a route was recorded — a missing route usually means location access was denied.
Step 3: Track Your Nutrition
Log meals and snacks to see calories, macros, and micronutrients, and compare them against the recommended daily allowances (RDA) built into the app. The nutrition database covers 2M+ foods and supports barcode scanning.
What you need: the foods you ate, ideally with barcodes or package labels for accuracy.
What happens: each entry updates your daily calorie and macro totals and shows how they stack up against your RDA.
Checkpoint: at day's end, your nutrition totals should reconcile with what you logged. If a food isn't found, log it manually rather than skipping it — gaps distort the trends you'll review in Step 4.
Step 4: Analyze Your Progress
Open the Progress module to visualize trends across nutrition, workouts, and cardio. Interactive charts cover weight, strength, and cardio trends.
What you need: at least a few days of consistent logging — trends need data points to be meaningful.
What happens: you see what's working, where you're drifting from your targets, and how your habits map to your original goal.
Checkpoint: compare your weight trend against your Step 1 goal. If the direction doesn't match, adjust either your logging consistency or your daily targets.
The Four Steps at a Glance
| Step | Action | Key Input | What You Get |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Set goal | Weight + gain/lose/maintain | Daily calorie and activity targets |
| 2 | Log training | Workouts, cardio sessions | Full training history with GPS routes |
| 3 | Track nutrition | Meals, barcodes | Calories, macros, micronutrients vs. RDA |
| 4 | Analyze progress | Accumulated logs | Charts for weight, strength, cardio |
Common Stumbling Points
- Skipping the weigh-in. Without a starting weight, the goal calculation has no anchor. Weigh in first.
- Logging workouts but not food (or vice versa). The Progress module compares nutrition, workouts, and cardio together; a missing category weakens the picture.
- Expecting instant trends. Charts need several days of data before patterns emerge. Log consistently for a week before judging results.
- Assuming everything is free. The app is free to download, but a Premium tier is listed separately. Review the Premium page to see which features sit behind it.
Where to Start Today
Download CrossTrainer from the App Store or Google Play, complete the weigh-in and goal selection, then log one workout and one full day of meals. That gives you enough data to open the Progress module and see your first trend — the point at which the four-step loop starts paying off.
