How to Install and Uninstall Privacy Badger

Updated

Privacy Badger is a free browser extension made by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) that stops companies from spying on you online. You install it from the official site, privacybadger.org, by choosing your browser and confirming the install prompt. If you later want it gone, you remove it the same way you remove any other extension in that browser. The steps below cover supported browsers, alternative installation, uninstalling, and where to get help.

Which browsers are supported

Privacy Badger offers direct install buttons for these browsers:

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Firefox for Android
  • Edge
  • Edge for Android
  • Opera
  • Brave

If you open privacybadger.org in a browser that isn't supported, the page shows "Browser Not Supported" along with a link for more info. For anything outside the list above, use the "Other browsers" alternative installation options rather than expecting a one-click button.

Installing Privacy Badger

  1. Go to privacybadger.org in a supported browser.
  2. Find the install button for your browser (for example, "Add to Chrome" or "Add to Firefox").
  3. Click it. Your browser opens its standard extension-install confirmation.
  4. Approve the install. The extension is now active.

The expected result is the Privacy Badger icon appearing in your browser's toolbar, from which you can open its menu and see the red, yellow, and green sliders that indicate how it treats each domain.

Alternative installation options

If your browser isn't in the supported list, or you prefer not to install from the site's buttons, the page links to "Alternative installation options." Use those when a direct button isn't available for your setup.

Note on permissions

Privacy Badger asks for access to your data for all websites. This is central to how it works: it needs to observe third-party trackers across the sites you visit in order to learn which ones to block. If you're not comfortable granting that access, the extension can't do its job.

Uninstalling Privacy Badger

Privacy Badger is removed through your browser's own extension settings, not from the Privacy Badger site. The general steps:

  1. Open your browser's extensions or add-ons page (usually under Settings or a menu like "Extensions" / "Add-ons and themes").
  2. Find Privacy Badger in the list.
  3. Choose Remove or Uninstall and confirm.

The expected result is that the Privacy Badger icon disappears from your toolbar and it no longer processes your browsing. The exact menu labels differ by browser, so follow your browser's extension-management flow rather than a fixed path.

If something goes wrong

The Privacy Badger site's FAQ includes a Troubleshooting section with these entry points:

  • "I need help!" — general support.
  • "I found a bug! What do I do now?" — for reporting problems.
  • "Why aren't videos loading on YouTube?" and "Why isn't Privacy Badger blocking ads on YouTube?" — common site-specific issues.
  • "How do I uninstall/remove Privacy Badger?" — the official removal guidance.

If you run a domain that uses cookies or other tracking and Privacy Badger is blocking you, the FAQ also covers how to stop that blocking.
