How to Install and Use the ThemeSong Extension for YouTube Music

Updated

ThemeSong is a browser extension that adds dynamic themes, visualizers, and utilities to YouTube Music (music.youtube.com). You install it from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons (or get it from the GitHub repository), then open YouTube Music in your browser and use the extension's theme, visualizer, and utility options. It's for anyone who uses YouTube Music in a desktop browser and wants to change how the player looks and behaves.

Before you start

  • A desktop browser that supports extensions — Chrome for the Chrome Web Store version, Firefox for the Firefox Add-ons version.
  • A YouTube Music session at music.youtube.com (you can be signed in or not; the extension enhances the page, it doesn't replace your account).
  • If you use the GitHub route, you'll need to load it as an unpacked/temporary extension in developer mode, which is more manual than a store install.

Install ThemeSong

Option 1: Chrome Web Store (Chrome and Chromium-based browsers)

  1. Open the Chrome Web Store listing for ThemeSong.
  2. Click Add to Chrome.
  3. Confirm the permissions prompt.
  4. Expected result: the extension icon appears in your toolbar and ThemeSong is listed as enabled in your extensions.

Option 2: Firefox Add-ons (Firefox)

  1. Open the Firefox Add-ons listing for ThemeSong.
  2. Click Add to Firefox.
  3. Confirm the permissions prompt.
  4. Expected result: the extension is installed and active in Firefox.

Option 3: GitHub repository (manual install)

  1. Open the ThemeSong GitHub repository and download the source (clone or download the ZIP and extract it).
  2. In your browser, open the extensions page and enable Developer mode.
  3. Choose Load unpacked (Chrome) or Load Temporary Add-on (Firefox) and select the extension folder or manifest file.
  4. Expected result: the extension loads for the current session. Note that temporary installs in Firefox are cleared when the browser closes, so you'd repeat this step after a restart.

Use it with YouTube Music

  1. Go to music.youtube.com in the same browser where you installed ThemeSong.
  2. Let the page load fully — the extension works on top of the YouTube Music interface, so it needs the page present.
  3. Open the extension's options/panel from the toolbar icon (or the in-page controls it adds) to reach its theme, visualizer, and utility settings.
  4. Pick a theme and turn on a visualizer, then adjust any utilities you want.
  5. Expected result: the YouTube Music page updates to reflect your chosen theme and visualizer without you leaving the site.

Common snags

  • Nothing changes on the page. Make sure you're on music.youtube.com (not the main youtube.com), and reload the tab after installing.
  • Extension installed but no controls visible. Open the extension from the toolbar icon — the theme/visualizer/utility options live in the extension's own panel.
  • Firefox temporary install disappears. That's expected for GitHub-loaded add-ons; reinstall after restarting, or use the Firefox Add-ons listing instead.
  • Store install blocked. Check that you're using a supported browser for that store (Chrome Web Store for Chrome/Chromium, Firefox Add-ons for Firefox).

The exact set of themes, visualizers, and utilities, and any permission details, are best confirmed on the store listing or repository page you install from, since those can change between versions.
