How to Install Meld on Linux, Windows, or macOS

Updated

Meld is packaged for most Linux/Unix distributions and is also available on Flathub, so Linux users can usually install it through their system's package manager or Flatpak. Windows users should download the installer from the official site. macOS is not yet officially supported, but semi-official builds can be installed via Homebrew, MacPorts, or Fink. If you prefer to build from source, the official instructions cover that path.

Linux and Unix

Meld is packaged for most Linux/Unix distributions, which means the simplest route is your distribution's own package manager. The exact command depends on your distro, but the package is generally named meld.

If your distribution's repositories don't carry a recent version, or you prefer a sandboxed install, Meld is also available on Flathub. That gives you a Flatpak build that stays consistent across distributions.

Windows

Windows users should download the installer from the official site. Two limitations are worth knowing before you start:

  • Meld does not yet support automatic updates.
  • Meld does not yet support portable installs.

So plan on manually checking for new releases and re-running the installer when you want to upgrade.

macOS

Meld is not yet supported on macOS. Semi-official builds are available, and the project hopes they will be fully integrated in the future. You can install from Homebrew, MacPorts, or Fink.

Older third-party binaries are also still available, but they may have issues with recent versions of macOS. If you go that route, expect possible breakage on newer systems.

Installing from source

For installing from source, see the official instructions. If you just want to run Meld from a clone without installing it, you can do so directly:

$ git clone https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/meld.git
$ bin/meld

Requirements

Before building or running Meld, make sure these are present:

Requirement Version
Python 3.6
GTK+ 3.22
GLib 2.36
PyGObject 3.36
GtkSourceView 4.0
pycairo —

See the current README file for development and build requirements.

Which version to pick

The most recent stable release is the best option for most users, and changes to these releases are kept to a minimum. At the time of writing, the stable release is Meld 3.24.0 (20 June 2026). You can get it as source (.tar.xz) or as Windows and macOS binaries. The full release list covers previous versions, and old source archives or Windows installers are also downloadable.

If something goes wrong

All development happens on GNOME's GitLab instance. Open an issue for any problems you encounter, and ask on the discussion board if you're uncertain about anything.
