How to Join CATMHS Online
Updated
CATMHS (the Cumbria Amenity Trust Mining History Society) accepts new members through an online membership application on its website, catmhs.org.uk. If you want to join, use the "Join CATMHS on-line!" route on the site rather than the payment page used by existing members — that page is for subscription renewals, not new applications.
What CATMHS is
CATMHS is a society dedicated to the better understanding and preservation of historic mining sites in Cumbria, both above and below ground. Members explore these sites, research their history, and help bring that history to wider public attention.
Joining as a new member
The site states: "You can join CATMHS entirely on-line via our On-line membership application." So the whole process is handled online.
- Go to catmhs.org.uk.
- Find the "Join CATMHS on-line!" section on the home page.
- Follow the link to the online membership application.
- Complete and submit the application.
The site does not publish the membership fee on the home page, so check the application itself for the current amount before you commit.
If you are already a member
Renewal is a separate path. Existing members renew by paying their subscriptions through the payments page, not through the new-member application.
Payment methods and fees
CATMHS accepts payments by direct bank transfer, cheque, cash, and PayPal. The site notes that bank transfer, cheque, and cash cost the Society nothing, while PayPal carries a fee:
| Amount paid via PayPal | Cost to the Society |
|---|---|
| £10 | 3.4% |
| £60 | 1.75% |
| £6000 | 1.4% |
Because of this, the site asks that anyone paying more than £50 to the Society avoid PayPal and use direct bank transfer instead. The stated bank details are:
- Account Name: The Cumbria Amenity Trust
- Sort Code: 60-07-10
- Account Number: 50607790
What else the site offers
Beyond membership, CATMHS sells publications through its online shop, including an updated Coniston Copper Mines Field Guide by Eric Holland. CATMHS Journal 7 is also available there: A4 format, soft cover, 219 pages, with eighteen articles ranging from "Backbarrow Iron Works" and "Burlington Quarry" to "Exploration of Yewthwaite Mine" and "Extractive Industries of Walney Island," plus many colour and monochrome photos, most previously unpublished. A newly uploaded Hodbarrow Mines CD photo album is also flagged on the home page.
