How to Look Up Per Diem Rates on gsa.gov
Updated
You can look up per diem rates on gsa.gov using the Per Diem Look-Up tool on the GSA homepage. Enter a location (state plus optional city or ZIP), then choose a fiscal year or a travel start and end date. The tool returns rates for dates between 10/1/2024 and 09/30/2027. Note that Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. territories and possessions use rates set by the Department of Defense, and foreign countries use rates set by the Department of State, so those locations are not covered by the standard GSA lookup.
What the tool covers
The Per Diem Look-Up is built into the GSA homepage and is organized in two steps: location, then date.
| Input | Options | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Location | State (required), city (optional), or ZIP | "Get my location" can fill in your current location |
| Date | Fiscal year (2025, 2026, 2027) or travel start and end dates | Rates available 10/1/2024–09/30/2027 |
The date step accepts either a fiscal year selection or a specific trip range. If you enter a range, the end date cannot fall before the start date.
Step-by-step lookup
- Go to gsa.gov and find the Per Diem Look-Up section.
- Under "1 Choose a location," select a state from the dropdown. Add a city or ZIP if you want a narrower result, or use "Get my location."
- Under "2 Choose a date," either pick a fiscal year (2027 is labeled the current federal fiscal year) or enter a travel start date and end date in mm/dd/yyyy format.
- Submit the lookup and read the returned rates for your location and dates.
Expected result: rates for the location and period you specified. If the location field is empty or invalid, the tool shows "No results could be found for the location you've entered." If the rate service itself is unavailable, it shows "The Per Diem API is not responding. Please try again later."
Common snags
- Date outside the window. Rates are only available between 10/1/2024 and 09/30/2027. A trip outside that range will not return results.
- Reversed dates. The end date cannot occur before the start date.
- Wrong rate authority. Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. territories and possessions are set by the Department of Defense; foreign countries are set by the Department of State. Use those agencies' rates rather than expecting the standard GSA lookup to apply.
- Temporary API errors. The "API is not responding" message is a service-side issue, not a problem with your entry — retry later.
