How to Make Your Own Hologram at Holocenter

Updated

You can make your own hologram by signing up for the HoloCenter's hands-on workshop, a 4-hour session taught by Executive Director Linda Law in the center's mini-holography lab. The workshop costs $100 plus a $20 materials fee, and you register by contacting Linda Law directly at [email protected] or 845-532-3035 to find out the date of the next session.

What the workshop involves

The HoloCenter describes this as a unique hands-on workshop rather than a lecture or demo. Over the 4-hour session you will:

  • Learn some of the principles of holography
  • Make your own creative composition
  • Record that composition as a hologram in the HoloCenter's new mini-holography lab

The session is taught by Linda Law, the HoloCenter's Executive Director. The $20 materials fee covers what you need to produce your hologram; the $100 fee is the workshop fee itself.

How to sign up

There is no online booking form mentioned on the site. Registration goes through direct contact:

Step Action
1 Email [email protected] or call 845-532-3035
2 Ask for the details and date of the next workshop
3 Confirm your spot and arrange payment (the site lists PayPal among its payment platforms)

Because workshop dates aren't published on the page, contacting Linda Law is the only way to find out when the next session runs. Do this before planning a trip, since the workshop is scheduled separately from the gallery's regular hours.

Where it takes place

The workshop is held at the HoloCenter's mini-holography lab at 518 Broadway, Kingston, New York 12401. If you're also visiting the gallery, note the two different sets of hours:

  • Gallery hours: Friday to Sunday, 12–5pm
  • By appointment: Monday to Thursday

The current exhibition runs January 18th – May 4th 2025, with an opening event on January 18th, 5–8pm. You can pair a workshop visit with a look at the exhibition, but the workshop itself requires the separate registration described above.

What to check before you commit

  • Confirm the next date first. The page gives contact details for "our next workshop" rather than a fixed schedule, so availability may vary.
  • Budget $120 total. $100 workshop fee plus $20 materials fee.
  • Plan around gallery hours. If you want to see the exhibition on the same trip, aim for Friday–Sunday afternoons or ask about a Monday–Thursday appointment.

For background on the process before you go, the HoloCenter points visitors to its "What is Holography" page, and you can sign up for its newsletter to hear about new workshops and opening events.
