How to Play Pokerdle: Rules, Feedback, and a Simple Solving Method

Updated

Pokerdle is a Wordle-style puzzle in which you guess a hidden five-card poker hand in five attempts. Each guess must be a valid five-card hand, and after every guess the game colors each card green, yellow, or gray to show how close you are. The rules below come from the game's own How to Play section on pokerdle.com.

The Basic Rules

  • Goal: determine the hidden five-card poker hand.
  • Attempts: you get five guesses.
  • Valid guesses: each guess must be a valid five-card hand, so you cannot enter five unrelated cards.
  • Input method: pick cards from the on-screen card keyboard rather than typing them.
  • Feedback: after each guess, every card is marked with a color.

Reading the Feedback Colors

Color Meaning Example from the game
Green The card is in the correct position A ♥ is correct
Yellow The card is in the hand but in the wrong position K ♠ is in the hand but misplaced
Gray The card is not in the hand at all Q ♣ is not in the hand

The color applies to the card in that specific slot, so the same card can move from yellow to green once you place it correctly.

A Practical Way to Solve It

  1. Start with a broad, valid hand. Choose five cards that cover a range of ranks and suits so the first round of colors tells you as much as possible about which cards are in the hidden hand.
  2. Lock in greens. Any green card is settled; keep it in the same position in every later guess.
  3. Reposition yellows. A yellow card belongs in the hand but not where you put it, so move it to a different slot on the next attempt.
  4. Drop grays. Remove gray cards from future guesses and use those slots to test new cards.
  5. Narrow down by elimination. By the third or fourth guess you should know most of the hand's cards; use the remaining attempts to fix their order.

Because every guess must be a valid five-card hand, plan your test cards as a legal hand rather than five arbitrary cards. This constraint is the main difference from Wordle-style word games and is the most common point new players trip on.

Common Sticking Points

  • Treating yellow as "correct card, wrong place" only for that suit. The feedback is about the card itself, so a yellow card still needs to be placed somewhere else in the hand.
  • Reusing gray cards. A gray card is out; spending a slot on it wastes one of your five attempts.
  • Ignoring the valid-hand rule. If a planned guess is not a legal poker hand, rethink it before you commit.

The game is played directly in the browser on pokerdle.com; select cards from the keyboard, submit a guess, read the colors, and repeat until the hidden hand is revealed or your five attempts run out.
