How to Search and Navigate Biology LibreTexts

Updated

Biology LibreTexts is an open-access, multi-institutional library of postsecondary biology texts. You can find content in two main ways: type a keyword into the site search box, or browse the Bookshelves menu by subject. Once inside a page, the toolbar lets you switch to Reader Mode, adjust text size and color, and download the page or full book as a PDF. Logging in is optional for reading, but it unlocks saved progress and instructor features.

Searching by Keyword

The search box is the fastest route when you already know the topic you need.

  1. Locate the Search field at the top of the page.
  2. Type your term (for example, a process, organism, or concept name).
  3. Submit the search to see matching pages, books, and learning objects.

The site also offers a Search this book option when you are already inside a specific text. Use it when you want to stay within one book rather than searching the entire library.

Expected result: a results list of pages and books containing your term. If a search returns an error or an empty page, the excerpt shows the site can display an "Error — This action is not available" message, so try a broader term or navigate through Bookshelves instead.

Browsing the Bookshelves

When you don't have an exact term in mind, browse by structure instead of searching.

  • Open the Bookshelves menu to see subject-level categories.
  • Drill down from a broad subject into narrower topics and then into individual books and chapters.
  • Use the global hierarchy controls to expand or collapse the location tree and see where the current page sits.

This path is useful for survey reading, where you want to move through a subject in order rather than jump to a single page.

Using the Page Toolbar

Each page carries a toolbar with reading and export controls. The available options include:

Tool What it does
Reader Mode Switches to a cleaner reading layout
Text Color Resets or applies color schemes such as Bright, Blues, Gray, or Inverted
Text Size Increases or decreases font size
Margin Size Widens or narrows the page margins
Dyslexic Font Enables a font option for easier reading
Download Page (PDF) Saves the current page as a PDF
Download Full Book (PDF) Saves the entire book as a PDF

To verify a download worked: open the saved PDF and confirm it contains the page or book content you selected. If a control does not respond, the page may be showing the "action is not available" state noted above.

Logging In and Account Types

Reading does not require an account, but signing in adds features.

  • Standard login: use the Sign in link, enter your username and password, and you can return to the page you came from. A Forgot password option is available.
  • Instructor Account: a separate Request Instructor Account path exists for educators who need instructor-level tools.

If you only need to read or download, you can skip login entirely. If you want saved progress or teaching features, create or request the appropriate account.

Common Stumbling Blocks

  • Search returns nothing useful: switch to Bookshelves browsing and narrow down by subject.
  • A toolbar action fails: the page may be in an unavailable state; reload or try another page.
  • You can't find a specific book: use the global hierarchy to expand the tree rather than relying on search alone.

With these four moves — search, browse, use the toolbar, and log in only when needed — you can locate, read, and export Biology LibreTexts material without wasted steps.
