How to Start Using or Editing Memory Alpha

Memory Alpha is a collaborative English-language Star Trek encyclopedia that started in November 2003 and currently holds 66,575 articles and 71,420 files. You can read it without an account, but you need to sign in to save edits and keep a history under your name. If this is your first visit, the site itself recommends reading its introduction page before diving in.

Reading and Navigating the Wiki

The homepage is organized around a few entry points:

  • Current series hub – A Star Trek: Strange New Worlds section lists episode titles, characters, and season pages (Season 1 through Season 5), plus related specials like The Ready Room.
  • Latest news – Dated updates on awards, casting, and franchise events, such as the 23 December 2025 announcement that SNW Season 5 will add Thomas Jane as Dr. Leonard McCoy and Kai Murakami as Hikaru Sulu.
  • Featured article – A rotating deep-dive, for example the IKS Rotarran, a Klingon Bird-of-Prey in service during the 2370s.
  • Today in Trek history and Upcoming releases – Time-based shortcuts for what aired or is coming.
  • Where to watch – A pointer to viewing options rather than a streaming catalog itself.

Use the search bar for specific terms (character names, ship classes, episode titles). Because Memory Alpha is a reference wiki, article titles usually match in-universe names, so searching "Spock" or "Christopher Pike" works better than a plot description.

Creating an Account and Saving Edits

Reading is open to everyone. To contribute:

  1. Click Sign In in the top navigation.
  2. Create or log into a Fandom account.
  3. Open any article and use Edit (or View source for protected pages) to change text.
  4. Use Save to publish and View history to see prior revisions.

The homepage toolbar shows Sign In to Save, View source, History, Purge, and Talk — these are the standard MediaWiki controls. Purge refreshes the cached page; Talk opens the discussion page (the main talk page shows 1,403 threads).

Editing Rules and Etiquette

Memory Alpha is a collaborative project, so edits follow community norms rather than a single editor's preference:

  • Spoiler warning – The site explicitly warns that it contains spoilers, so content from current series is not hidden.
  • Canon and sourcing – Articles aim to be "definitive, accurate, and accessible," which in practice means citing episodes, films, and licensed reference works.
  • Talk pages – Disagreements over content are resolved on the Talk page before repeated reverts.
  • Edit summaries – Briefly state what you changed so others can review it in History.

If you are unsure where to begin, the Editing Memory Alpha section on the homepage links to guidance for new contributors.
