How to Subscribe to The Gammon Press Newsletter
Updated
The Gammon Press has a newsletter signup on its site, and after you submit your email you should see a confirmation message reading "Thank you for signing up!" The newsletter is the main way to keep up with new backgammon books and Bill Robertie's blog posts. You do not need to buy a book or sign up for lessons to subscribe — the signup is a separate entry point on the site.
Where the signup lives
The site is organized around four main areas, and the newsletter sits alongside them rather than inside a checkout flow:
- Newsletter — the subscription section, with the post-signup confirmation "Thank you for signing up!"
- Backgammon Books — the book catalog
- Bill's Blog — regular posts on backgammon topics
- Lessons & Coaching — help for players who feel stuck
Because the newsletter is its own section, you can subscribe without touching the store or the coaching pages.
What you get after subscribing
The newsletter is positioned as an updates channel. Based on how the site presents its content, expect it to surface things like:
- New book releases and noteworthy titles
- New posts from Bill's Blog
- General site news
The site's "New & Noteworthy" area is a good example of the kind of content that gets promoted: it currently features How to Play the Opening in Backgammon/Part 3 – Order From Chaos, described as intermediate/advanced, 142 pages with 223 diagrams, softbound, priced at $50 plus shipping and handling. A newsletter is a reasonable way to hear about that kind of release without checking the catalog manually.
Subscribing vs. buying books vs. getting coaching
These are three separate actions on the site, and it helps to keep them straight:
| Action | What it involves | What it gets you |
|---|---|---|
| Newsletter signup | Enter your email in the Newsletter section | Updates on new books, blog posts, and site news |
| Buying books | Add a title to cart and check out | Physical books, e.g. the Opening series at $50 each, 501 Essential Backgammon Problems, 3rd Edition at $35 |
| Lessons & Coaching | Go through the Lessons & Coaching section | Help for players who feel stuck or unhappy with their play |
Subscribing does not enroll you in coaching, and it does not buy a book. If your goal is to improve your play rather than just follow news, the Lessons & Coaching section is the relevant one.
Practical notes
- Watch for the confirmation. After submitting your email, the site shows "Thank you for signing up!" If you don't see it, the submission likely didn't go through — try again.
- Check your spam folder if updates don't arrive, since newsletter mail is often filtered.
- The blog is readable without subscribing. Bill's Blog publishes regularly on a range of backgammon topics — a recent example is a holding-game problem dated Sep 15, 2026, about whether to wait for a shot or abandon the holding game, in a cash game with the Jacoby Rule assumed. Subscribing just makes it easier to catch new posts.
- Prices and shipping are stated on the book listings, not in the newsletter signup. The newsletter itself carries no stated cost in the site material, but treat it as an updates channel rather than a discount program unless a specific offer says otherwise.
If you only want occasional news, the blog and the "New & Noteworthy" section already cover much of the same ground — the newsletter is for people who'd rather have it delivered.
