How to Take the Compost Facility Operator Training Course and Certification Exam

Updated

The Compost Council (compost.org) runs a Compost Facility Operator Training Course as a one-week virtual program: five 3.5-hour sessions, with an optional operator's exam and a separate certification exam. Sessions start at 11am Eastern Time, and registration is handled through the Council's site, with [email protected] as the contact for questions. Two planned sessions are listed on the site: November 30 – December 4, 2026, and February 22 – 27, 2027, both virtual.

What the course involves

Item Detail
Format Virtual, one week
Sessions Five sessions of 3.5 hours each
Start time 11am Eastern Time (12:30pm Newfoundland; 12pm Atlantic; 10am Central; 9am Mountain; 8am Pacific)
Optional exam Operator's exam included as an option
Certification exam Held on the final day of each session week (National & Alberta)

The time-zone list matters if you are joining from outside the Eastern zone — the site spells out the equivalent start times so you can plan your week around the sessions.

Planned sessions and exam dates

  • November 30 – December 4, 2026 (virtual) — Compost Facility Operator Certification Exam: December 4, 2026 (National & Alberta)
  • February 22 – 27, 2027 (virtual) — Compost Facility Operator Certification Exam: February 27, 2027 (National & Alberta)

Each session week has its own registration link on the site, and the Council directs questions to [email protected].

How to register

  1. Go to compost.org and find the Compost Facility Operator Training Course section.
  2. Choose the session week that fits your schedule (2026 or 2027).
  3. Use the "Register Here" link listed for that session.
  4. If you want the certification exam, note the exam date for your chosen week — it falls on the last day.
  5. Email [email protected] if you need details before registering, such as exam eligibility or which certification (National or Alberta) applies to you.

The site does not publish pricing for the course or exam, so confirm cost and payment details with the Council directly rather than assuming either is free.

Related dates worth knowing

The Council also lists International Compost Awareness Week 2027 for May 2–8, 2027, under the theme "All Paths Lead to Compost," with theme materials available as English and French PDFs. That is a separate event from the operator training, but it is the other fixed date on the calendar if you follow the Council's programming.

What to check before you commit

  • Certification type: The exam is offered as National & Alberta. If you need certification for a different jurisdiction, ask the Council whether it applies to you.
  • Exam vs. course: The operator's exam is described as optional within the course week; the certification exam is scheduled separately on the final day. Decide which one you actually need.
  • Time zone: Sessions start at 11am Eastern — convert carefully if you are in another region.
  • Logistics: For the conference side of the Council's events, the site notes a guestroom rate of $149/night at the DoubleTree by Hilton Calgary North, which is useful only if you are attending in person rather than the virtual course.
