How to Use The Death Generator to Make and Save an Image

Updated

The Death Generator is a browser-based image editor that overlays your own text onto a set of built-in templates. To use it, open the site, pick a generator from the gallery, type your text into the fields, and click Save to export a PNG. The grey checkerboard you see while editing marks transparent areas and is not included in the saved file. Everything runs in the page — the site's own note reads "No canvas! No canvas!" — so there is nothing to install.

Step 1: Choose a generator from the gallery

The landing page presents a gallery of generators. Each one is a different image template with its own text fields.

  • Use the 🎲 control to shuffle to a random generator if you don't have one in mind.
  • Use Hide generators / Show other generators to collapse or expand the gallery list and find a specific template faster.

The gallery is the only entry point; there is no separate upload-your-own-image flow described on the page.

Step 2: Edit the text fields

Once a generator is open, you'll see the template image with editable text fields.

  • Automatic wordwrapping is on by default, so long lines wrap inside the image instead of running off the edge. You don't need to insert manual line breaks for normal-length text.
  • If a field's text looks wrong, check whether you've typed into the correct field — each template maps fields to specific positions on the image.

Step 3: Understand the transparent background

This is the detail most first-time users trip on:

What you see What it means
Grey checkerboard behind the image Transparent pixels, shown only as an editing aid
Checkerboard gone after Save The export has a real transparent background

The site states this directly: the grey checkerboard "will disappear when you click Save, but is included here to make it easier to edit your image." So don't try to remove the checkerboard by changing settings — it is never part of the output. If you need a solid background (for example, to post on a platform that renders transparency as black), place the saved PNG on a colored background in another editor.

Step 4: Save the image

Click Save to export. The result is the template with your text baked in and transparency preserved. Verify the export by opening the saved file and confirming:

  1. Your text appears in the intended positions.
  2. No grey checkerboard is visible.
  3. Transparent regions show as transparent (or as your viewer's background color).

Common snags

  • Text runs past the image edge. Wordwrapping handles normal cases; very long unbroken strings (URLs, no-space text) may still overflow. Shorten the text or add spaces.
  • Checkerboard "still there" in a preview. Some image viewers and chat apps draw their own checkerboard for transparency. Open the file in a different viewer before assuming the export is wrong.
  • Can't find a template. Re-expand the gallery with Show other generators and use the 🎲 shuffle to browse.

About the project

The Death Generator is credited to Alice Averlong, with content by "somebody." The source code is linked on GitHub, and the page offers Ko-fi and Patreon links for support. The page does not state pricing or login requirements for using the generators, so treat access terms as unconfirmed until you load the site yourself.
