How to Use the ICANN Lookup Tool to Check a Domain Name
Updated
Go to lookup.icann.org, enter the domain name you want to check, and run the lookup. The tool returns the current registration data (such as registrar and registration dates) that is publicly available for that name. Use it when you need an official, ICANN-hosted view of domain registration data rather than a commercial WHOIS or hosting-panel summary.
What the tool is for
ICANN Lookup is the registration data lookup interface provided by ICANN. According to the site's own description, it lets you look up current registration data for domain names and Internet number resources. That makes it the reference point when you want to confirm what registration data exists for a name, and it is also the place to check number resources such as IP addresses and autonomous system numbers.
Step-by-step lookup
- Open the tool. In a browser, go to
lookup.icann.org. This is the official entry point; avoid third-party mirrors if you need the authoritative view. - Enter the search term. Type the full domain name (for example,
example.com) into the lookup field. For number resources, enter the IP address, IP block, or AS number instead. - Run the lookup. Submit the query and wait for the result page to load.
- Read the returned record. The result shows the registration data the tool currently holds for that name or resource. Check the registrar, key dates, and status information, and note that some fields may be absent or redacted.
- Verify what you found. If a field you expected is missing, treat that as a data-availability result, not a failed lookup — see the section below.
Reading the results
| What you see | What it means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Registrar and registration dates present | The registry/registrar data is being published for this name | Use these details to confirm who manages the name and when it was created or updated |
| Some contact fields missing or redacted | The published record is limited, often for privacy or policy reasons | Do not assume the domain is unregistered; rely on the fields that are shown |
| No record returned | The tool has no matching registration data for the term you entered | Re-check spelling and the exact domain or resource format before concluding anything |
A missing or redacted field is a normal outcome of how registration data is published, not evidence that the domain does not exist. Judge the domain by the fields that are present.
Common sticking points
- Searching a URL instead of a domain. Enter the domain name itself, not
https://prefixes or page paths. - Expecting full contact details. Public records are often limited; the tool shows what is available, and redaction is expected in many cases.
- Confusing domain and number lookups. The same interface handles both, but the input format differs — an IP address or AS number is not a domain name.
- Treating a blank field as an error. Re-run the query once to rule out a loading issue, then read the result as published.
When to use it
Use ICANN Lookup when you need the official registration-data view of a domain or number resource — for example, confirming a registrar before a transfer discussion, or checking whether a name has published registration data at all. For day-to-day management of a domain you own, your registrar's own panel remains the place to make changes; ICANN Lookup is for looking up, not editing.
