How to Use the Interactive Middle-earth Map
Updated
Open the site and click Enter Middle-earth to load the map. From there, the whole experience runs on four controls: scroll to zoom, drag to pan, click a marker to read about an event, and use the Legend panel to filter events, toggle journey paths, or turn on distance measuring. Play the story runs all 128 events in order. Everything below assumes the map has loaded and the Legend panel is available.
Getting oriented on the map
The map plots 128 events from The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion as markers on a single base map.
- Zoom: scroll on the map to zoom in and out.
- Pan: click and drag to move across the map.
- Event details: click any marker to read about that event.
The Legend panel (labeled "Events of Middle-earth") is where the filtering and tools live. If markers feel cluttered at a wide zoom level, zoom in before clicking, or filter first (next section).
Filtering events and showing journey paths
Use the Legend panel to narrow what appears on the map:
- Open the Legend panel.
- Filter events by book so only The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, or The Silmarillion events show.
- Toggle journey paths on or off to see the routes characters take between events.
Filtering by book is the fastest way to follow one storyline without the other 100-plus markers competing for attention. Turning journey paths on is most useful when you've already filtered to a single book, since the paths then trace one coherent route.
Measuring distance between two points
- In the Legend panel, enable Measure distance.
- Select two points on the map.
- Read the distance between them.
This is a straight-line measurement between the two points you pick, so it reflects map distance rather than any traveled route. Use it for quick comparisons ("how far is this location from that one?") rather than for journey lengths.
Watching the story play out
Click Play the story to watch all 128 events unfold in sequence. This is the best way to see the chronology as a whole rather than clicking markers one at a time. Because it runs every event in order, it's long — treat it as a guided overview, then go back and click individual markers for detail.
Satellite view
A Satellite toggle switches the base map to a satellite-style view. The site notes the base map artwork is sourced from the internet and used for fan/educational purposes, and that it does not claim copyright over it.

Common snags
- Markers overlap at wide zoom. Zoom in or filter by book before clicking.
- Journey paths look tangled. Turn paths off, or filter to a single book first.
- "Play the story" seems slow. It runs all 128 events; use it as an overview and click markers for specifics afterward.
