Is Snipaste Free? Personal vs. Business Use and PRO License Explained

Updated

Snipaste is free for personal use, always. For business use, the rules changed with version 2.0: Snipaste 1.x remains free for commercial use, but starting from Snipaste 2.0 a paid license is required. If you only need the core snipping and pinning features, the free download covers it. If you use it at work on version 2.0 or later, you need a PRO license.

Who pays and who doesn't

Use case Version Cost
Personal use Any version Free
Business use Snipaste 1.x Free
Business use Snipaste 2.0 and later Paid license required

The distinction is about where you use it, not which features you touch. A designer using Snipaste at home pays nothing. The same person using it on a work machine running 2.0 needs a license.

PRO license options

The official site lists three purchase paths:

  • Cross-platform Desktop PRO, 1 device (Windows/Mac/Linux) — $8.99
  • Cross-platform Desktop PRO, 3 devices (Windows/Mac/Linux) — $19.99
  • Microsoft Store PRO, 10 devices (Windows 11/10) — $19.99

The first two are bought directly and cover Windows, macOS, and Linux. The Microsoft Store option covers more devices but is Windows-only.

What you get either way

The free download includes the features Snipaste is known for:

  • Press F1 to snip, F3 to paste the screenshot as a floating window
  • Auto-detect UI elements and pixel-level control
  • Color picker (F1, then C, then F3)
  • Multi-screen and HiDPI/retina support
  • Pasting clipboard content — images, plain text, HTML, color info, and image files (PNG, JPG, BMP, TGA, ICO, TIFF, GIF) — as topmost floating windows
  • Floating window operations: zoom, rotate, flip, transparency, click-through, grouping, auto backup
  • Image annotation with rectangles, ellipses, arrows, pencil, marker, and text

The site's own description of PRO features is limited to the pricing table above. It does not publish a feature-by-feature comparison between free and PRO on the page, so treat any claim about PRO-exclusive features as unverified until you check the official documentation.

How to decide

  • Personal use, any version: download the free build. No license needed.
  • Work use, still on 1.x: you can stay on 1.16.2 (the listed previous version) and remain free, but you miss 2.x updates.
  • Work use, want 2.x: budget $8.99 for one machine, or $19.99 if you need three cross-platform devices or ten Windows devices via the Microsoft Store.

If your main question is whether you can use Snipaste at the office without paying, the answer depends entirely on the version: 1.x yes, 2.0 and later no.
