Is the Rotary PlayGarden at Guadalupe River Park Open?
Updated
No. The Rotary PlayGarden is closed for all of October while construction crews refresh its resilience turf, and all programming there is paused during that time. According to the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy, the plan is to return to regularly scheduled hours in November.
What the closure covers
The shutdown is not limited to drop-in play. The Conservancy states that all programming taking place in the Rotary PlayGarden will be on pause while the turf work is underway, specifically including:
- BEE programming
- Animal encounters
- Reservations
So if your visit depended on a scheduled activity or a booked reservation at the PlayGarden, it will not run during October.
Why it is closed
The closure is tied to a turf refresh project — replacing or restoring the PlayGarden's resilience turf. The Conservancy says it has been working with several partners to get the project started:
- Councilmember Mulcahy's Office
- San José Rotary Club
- City of San José's Parks and Recreation team
The stated reason for closing entirely, rather than working around visitors, is the safety of attendees while construction teams are on site.
When it should reopen
The Conservancy's guidance is that regularly scheduled hours are expected to resume in November. Treat that as the current plan rather than a guaranteed date — construction timelines can shift, so it is worth checking the Conservancy's site or contacting them before a November trip, especially if you are traveling for a specific program.
What to do instead
The PlayGarden is one part of the larger Guadalupe River Park & Gardens, and the rest of the park is not covered by this closure notice. While the PlayGarden is shut, you can still:
- Walk, run, ride, or skate the 2.6 miles of trails
- Visit the Heritage Rose Garden, which the Conservancy describes as having 3,700 varieties
- See the fruit trees in the Historic Orchard
- Stop by the Visitor Center for a map, class sign-ups, and wildlife displays
If your plans centered on a PlayGarden reservation or an animal encounter, the practical step is to postpone to November or later and confirm the reopening before you go.
