Closed Mondays & major holidays —

Plan around the Monday closure: if your trip falls on a Monday or a major holiday, the museum and gardens will not be open. The café also closes earlier than the gardens, so a late-afternoon visit means eating before 3pm or after you leave.

Two things to note before you arrive:

  • Discounts require ID. The senior, military, and college-student rates are listed with ID requirements, so bring proof of age, service, or enrollment.
  • Membership pays for itself quickly. Members enter free, which matters if you plan to return for rotating gallery exhibitions or seasonal garden changes. The site frames membership as supporting the museum's mission of presenting Japanese cultural experiences, so it functions as both admission and donation.

What's Included and What to See

Your ticket covers both the museum and the gardens. The gardens are described as a living exhibition, Roji-en, made up of six distinct historical gardens. The museum holds rotating gallery exhibitions on different aspects of Japan's culture, so what you see changes over time.

Current and upcoming programming listed on the site includes:

  • Clifton Karhu: An American in Kyoto — open to the public Friday, September 18, 2026 through Sunday, January 17, 2027
  • Morikami's 50th Golden Gala — Saturday, March 6, 2027 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Exhibition Opening: Mending Cracks in Time — October 16–17, 2026

Special events like the gala may have separate ticketing or pricing not shown here; check the event listing before you go.

Before You Visit

  • Check for closures. The site notes ongoing lobby bathroom renovations, with additional restrooms available in the hallway near Cornell Café. Temporary disruptions like this are worth checking on the Plan Your Visit page.
  • Budget your time. With the gardens, museum, and café all on site, a half day is reasonable; the café's 11am–3pm window shapes how you structure lunch.
  • Buy or check in online. A checkout page exists on the site, so tickets may be purchasable in advance — useful if you're visiting during a popular exhibition opening.

For the full list of programs and events, see the museum's Event List, and use the Plan Your Visit page for current details before you travel.
