Powerhouse is Australia's largest museum group, with four locations in Sydney: Parramatta, Ultimo, Castle Hill, and Sydney Observatory. As of the current site information, only Ultimo is closed — it is temporarily shut for heritage revitalisation. Parramatta opens 7 November, Castle Hill is open on weekends, and Sydney Observatory is open Thursday to Sunday.

Powerhouse Parramatta
The newest site, opening 7 November. If you are planning a visit around that date, Parramatta is the location to watch — the site presents a countdown to the opening.
Powerhouse Ultimo
Currently closed for heritage revitalisation. Plan around this if Ultimo was your intended destination; the other three locations remain options.
Powerhouse Castle Hill
Open on weekends only. Suitable if your visit falls on a Saturday or Sunday.
Sydney Observatory
Open Thursday through Sunday. A good fit for a visit later in the week or on the weekend.
The Collection
Powerhouse is custodian to more than half a million objects of national and international significance, described as one of the finest and most diverse collections in the world. For the first time in the museum's 140-year history, the entire Powerhouse Collection is housed in one location. It includes the Powerhouse Archives — hundreds of Collected Archives plus the Powerhouse Institutional Archives dating from 1880.
Staying Updated
Powerhouse offers a subscribe option for news, exhibitions, and programs. Subscribing requires agreeing to the Privacy Policy. This is useful if you want opening updates, particularly around the Parramatta launch.
Planning Your Visit
- Check the day first. Castle Hill and Sydney Observatory have limited opening days, so match your visit to their schedules.
- Skip Ultimo for now. It is closed for revitalisation, so build your itinerary around the other locations.
- Time a Parramatta visit from 7 November. Before that date, Parramatta is not yet open.
