Should I download OpenRCT2 directly or use OpenLauncher?

Updated

Download OpenRCT2 directly if you just want the current release and are happy to update it yourself; use OpenLauncher if you want a helper that manages versions and launches the game for you. Both are offered on the official site, both list Windows builds, and neither is required by the other — OpenLauncher is a convenience layer, not a replacement for the game itself.

What each download actually is

The OpenRCT2 project describes itself as an open source re-implementation of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. On its home page it presents two separate downloads:

Download Version shown Size shown What it is
OpenRCT2 v0.5.5 75.8 MiB The game program itself
OpenLauncher v0.5.4 44.4 MiB A launcher/management tool

The OpenRCT2 build is marked as signed, and the page links to a full list of versions. The launcher has its own version list as well. Note that the two version numbers are independent — OpenLauncher v0.5.4 is not "older" than OpenRCT2 v0.5.5 in any meaningful sense; they are different products on separate release tracks.

Choose the direct OpenRCT2 download if…

  • You only need one working copy of the game right now.
  • You prefer to control updates yourself rather than have a tool do it.
  • You want the smallest number of moving parts: download, install, play.
  • You already know which release you want and don't need to switch between them.

The trade-off is that keeping up with new releases is on you. When a new version appears, you go back to the versions list and download it again.

Choose OpenLauncher if…

  • You expect to run more than one version, for example to test a new release while keeping a stable one.
  • You'd rather have something else handle fetching and switching versions.
  • You want a single entry point for starting the game instead of tracking the executable yourself.

The trade-off is an extra component to install and keep working. If it ever misbehaves, you still have the option of launching OpenRCT2 directly.

A practical way to decide

Ask yourself one question: do you expect to manage more than one version of OpenRCT2?

  • No, or not sure yet → download OpenRCT2 directly. You can always add the launcher later; nothing about the direct download locks you in.
  • Yes → start with OpenLauncher, since that is the problem it exists to solve.

Either way, the next step after downloading is the same: follow the Getting Started Guide for installation, setup and hints, or the user manual for how to install and play. Those two documents cover the part that neither download handles on its own — getting the game running with your RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 files.

Common sticking points

  • Treating the launcher as the game. Installing OpenLauncher alone does not give you OpenRCT2; it manages it. If you go the launcher route, make sure the game itself ends up installed.
  • Mixing up version numbers. Seeing v0.5.4 next to v0.5.5 does not mean you are choosing between an old and a new build of the same thing.
  • Assuming platform coverage. The home page lists Windows builds for both downloads. If you are on another platform, check the full version lists rather than assuming the same files apply.
  • Skipping the setup docs. The downloads are only part of the process; the Getting Started Guide and user manual are where installation and configuration are actually explained.
