Should I use the discdogs Web App or the Chrome Extension?
Updated
Pick the Web App if you want to manage alerts from a standalone dashboard, including on mobile, and want advanced filters in one place. Pick the Chrome Extension if you do most of your record hunting on a desktop browser and prefer to set up alerts without leaving Discogs. Both use the same alert logic and the same notification channels (email and Telegram), so the real difference is where you work.
The two options at a glance
| Dimension | Web App | Chrome Extension |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Desktop and mobile browser | Desktop only, inside Discogs |
| Interface | Standalone dashboard | Extra columns and controls added to your existing Discogs wantlist and release pages |
| Wantlist import | Imported automatically after login | Uses your existing Discogs wantlist directly |
| Alert setup | Pick releases in the dashboard, apply filters | Managed from inside Discogs |
| Filters | Maximum price, media & sleeve condition, minimum seller rating, shipping regions, automatic duplicate removal | Same alert logic; setup happens on the Discogs page |
| Notifications | Email, Telegram | Email, Telegram |
| Best for | Managing alerts away from Discogs, or from a phone | Staying in the Discogs flow while browsing on desktop |
How to choose
Choose the Web App if:
- You want to check or adjust alerts without opening Discogs.
- You browse on mobile and want the same access as on desktop.
- You prefer a single dashboard where advanced filters (price ceiling, condition, seller rating, shipping region, duplicate removal) live together.
Choose the Chrome Extension if:
- You spend most of your browsing time on Discogs in a desktop browser.
- You want alerts created in context — right on the wantlist or release page you're already looking at.
- You'd rather not switch to a separate app to manage anything.
You don't have to treat this as permanent
The two are not mutually exclusive in terms of workflow: the extension layers onto your existing Discogs wantlist, while the Web App imports that same wantlist automatically. If your habits change — say you start checking alerts on your phone — you can move to the dashboard without rebuilding your list.
What's the same either way
- Login: Both use your Discogs account through the official Discogs OAuth API. discdogs states it never sees or stores your Discogs credentials, and you can revoke access at any time.
- Alert logic: Alerts fire when new listings match your criteria, and the site says notifications arrive within seconds.
- Notification channels: Email and Telegram.
- Setup time: The site describes first alerts as taking under a minute with a few clicks.
A quick way to decide
Ask yourself one question: where do I want to be when I set up an alert?
- If the answer is "on the Discogs page I'm already looking at" → Chrome Extension.
- If the answer is "anywhere, including my phone, in a dedicated dashboard" → Web App.
If you're unsure, start with the Web App for the broader access, and add the extension later if you find yourself wanting to create alerts mid-browse.
