What a Typical Dive Central Trip Is Like: Schedule, Crew, and Diving Style
Updated
A typical Dive Central trip is a two-tank boat dive in Monterey or Carmel Bay aboard the Escapade, a 38-foot Canaveral-certified dive boat rated for 20 divers. Weekend trips run year round and depart from the "K" Dock at the Monterey Marina. You bring all your own gear, arrive 30 minutes before departure, and dive in unsupervised buddy pairs with an experienced skipper, crew, and dive masters aboard. Scheduled trips are $135 per person.
Schedule and departure
- Weekend trips: Scheduled year round. Departure times vary, so check the schedule before booking.
- Midweek trips, night dives, and tour-guided trips: Available by prior arrangement rather than on the standard weekend schedule.
- Departure point: The "K" Dock at the Monterey Marina, located just to the right of the public boat ramp next to the Harbormaster's office.
Directions if you're driving south on Highway 1: take the Del Monte/Monterey exit, follow Del Monte to the Old Fisherman's Wharf parking lot entrance. The unloading area is at the top of "K" Dock, and parking is available in the Fisherman's Wharf lot (metered or ticketed).
What happens on the boat
The Escapade cruises at speeds up to 20 knots, which shortens travel time to the dive sites. Dive site selection depends on weather and ocean conditions on the day — the crew picks sites in Monterey and Carmel Bay accordingly, so you won't necessarily know your exact sites until the trip.
Safety and navigation equipment aboard includes GPS, radar, radio, first aid, and oxygen.
Crew and diving style
The boat is staffed by an experienced skipper, crew, and dive masters whose stated role is to ensure your comfort and safety. Notably, Dive Central offers the freedom of unsupervised buddy diving — you and your buddy plan and conduct your own dives rather than following a divemaster-led group. That makes it a better fit for certified divers who are comfortable navigating and managing their own profiles than for divers who want hand-holding.

Who this trip suits
This is a good match if you're a certified diver with your own gear who wants flexible, self-directed buddy diving and fast access to Monterey and Carmel Bay sites. It's a weaker match if you need rental gear, tanks, or a guided group dive — you'd need to arrange a tour-guided trip in advance or look elsewhere for equipment.
