What Are Petoskey Stones and What Does Sturgeon River Pottery Offer?

Petoskey Stones are fossilized coral found primarily along the shores of Lake Michigan, and they are one of Michigan's most recognizable natural keepsakes. Sturgeon River Pottery of Petoskey, Michigan, carries Petoskey Stone items alongside its pottery and hand-crafted gifts, including a Petoskey Stone Medallion Mug listed at $36.95. If you are looking for a Petoskey Stone–related souvenir or gift from a Northern Michigan shop, this store is a relevant place to check.

What a Petoskey Stone Is

A Petoskey Stone is the fossilized remains of a colonial coral, Hexagonaria percarinata, that lived in the area's warm, shallow seas roughly 350 million years ago. The distinctive six-sided pattern visible on a polished stone is the fossilized coral skeleton. Because the stones are tied to the Lake Michigan shoreline and Michigan's Up North region, they function as a regional emblem and a common souvenir or gift.

The store's site also includes a checkout page, indicating online purchasing is part of the shopping flow. The available evidence does not list a full Petoskey Stone product catalog, so treat the mug as an example of the type of item rather than a complete inventory.

Why People Buy Petoskey Stone Items

Petoskey Stone products work well as:

• Souvenirs from a Northern Michigan trip, especially the Petoskey and Petoskey-area shoreline.
• Gifts for someone with Michigan ties, since the stone is a state symbol.
• Functional keepsakes, such as a mug that can be used daily rather than only displayed.

A mug like the Petoskey Stone Medallion Mug combines the regional meaning of the stone with an everyday object, which is why this category of item is often chosen over a purely decorative piece.

Practical Considerations Before Buying

• Confirm current price and availability. The $36.95 figure comes from the store's product listing; prices and stock can change, so verify at checkout.
• Check shipping and pickup options. The site has a checkout page, but the provided information does not detail shipping regions or store pickup terms.
• Decide on the item type. If the goal is a usable gift, a mug or similar piece may fit better than a display-only stone.
• Browse beyond Petoskey Stones. The store also carries pottery, outdoor furniture, and hand-crafted gifts, so it can serve as a one-stop stop for multiple gifts.
