What Are SKIF and SKIV in Special K?

Updated

SKIF and SKIV are two bundled applications that ship alongside Special K. SKIF (Special K Injection Frontend) is an ultra light-weight launcher for Steam, Epic, Xbox and GOG games that can bypass Steam's forced patching and Microsoft Store inconveniences. SKIV (Special K Image Viewer) is a portable HDR image viewer, screen capture/snipping, tonemapping and analysis tool. Both are separate from the core Special K injection mod, which is the part best known for fixing and enhancing graphics, performance analysis and correction mods.

SKIF: Special K Injection Frontend

SKIF is the front end you use to launch and manage games with Special K. According to the site, it is an ultra light-weight launcher covering Steam, Epic, Xbox and GOG, and it can bypass Steam's forced patching and Microsoft Store inconveniences.

It also has a direct integration with Special K's ValvePlug project, described as a Steam Input kill-switch that Valve has not implemented.

SKIF is also the tool used to switch update channels. To opt into experimental builds from a stable install:

  1. Launch the Special K Injection Frontend (SKIF.exe).
  2. Open the ⚙ Settings tab.
  3. Change Check for updates to Special K to Discord (updates regularly).

If a new version is available, it downloads automatically in the background (about 10 MB), and SKIF prompts you to install it when the download finishes. This matters because the experimental builds are where new features and fixes appear first, and the stable build is often dated by a few months.

SKIV: Special K Image Viewer

SKIV is a portable HDR image viewer and a screen capture/snipping, tonemapping and analysis tool. It also handles decode/encode/transcode for a range of image formats:

Format Supported in SKIV
JPEG-XR Yes on Windows; excluded on Linux because the format is patented by Microsoft
JPEG-XL Yes
AVIF Yes
Radiance HDR Yes
OpenEXR Yes
UltraHDR Yes
PNG Yes

On Linux, SKIV runs using Proton and supports all of the listed formats except JPEG-XR.

SKIV pairs naturally with Special K's in-game HDR screenshot feature, which captures using JPEG-XR, JPEG-XL, AVIF or PNG with configurable compression quality and in-game snippin[g]. If you take HDR screenshots in games, SKIV is the bundled tool for viewing, tonemapping and converting them.

How the Two Fit Together

  • SKIF is the entry point. You use it to launch supported storefront games with Special K and to move between stable and experimental update channels.
  • SKIV is a utility. It is not required for in-game modding; it is there for image work, especially HDR capture review and format conversion.
  • Neither replaces the core mod. The main Special K feature set — the advanced FPS limiter with automatic VRR optimization, real-time latency and display output analysis, improved latency and performance in borderless window mode for Direct3D 11 games, and HDR screenshots — lives in Special K itself, not in these two bundled apps.

If your goal is simply to run Special K in a game, SKIF is the piece you need. If your goal is to inspect, tonemap or convert HDR screenshots, use SKIV.
