What Are the Cantons of the Barony of Hawkwood and How Do I Get Involved?

Updated

The Barony of Hawkwood has two Cantons: Stormwall and Haukesgate. Hawkwood is a branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) covering the western-most portion of North Carolina, and it is the second youngest barony in the Kingdom of Atlantia. If you want to get involved, the main paths are joining the barony's Talon Talk Google Group, its Facebook Group, or its unofficial Discord server — and if you live outside the barony's lands, you can follow along through the public Facebook Page.

Where Hawkwood Fits in the SCA

The SCA is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to studying and selectively re-creating life in the Middle Ages. Hawkwood belongs to the Kingdom of Atlantia, which encompasses Washington, DC, plus Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Augusta, GA.

Within that structure, Hawkwood is a barony — a local branch — and its two cantons, Stormwall and Haukesgate, sit beneath it as smaller sub-groups.

What You Can Actually Do in the SCA

Participation is open-ended: members research and adopt medieval-style names reflecting their chosen persona's culture and time period, and take part in as many or as few activities as interest them. Typical SCA events include:

  • Tournaments and fencing
  • Music and singing
  • Feasting and courts
  • Arts displays
  • Activities for children

As the barony puts it, this covers "just about anything having to do with the Middle Ages that our members can think to do or recreate" — while deliberately skipping the plague, poor hygiene, serfdom, and torture.

How to Get Involved

The right channel depends on where you live.

If you live within the barony's lands

  1. Join Talon Talk — the barony's Google Group for residents. Email the Baronial Webminister to be added.
  2. Join the Facebook Group — open to members living within Hawkwood's lands.
  3. Join the Discord server — an unofficial community space at https://discord.gg/taQ95PduNh.

If you live outside the barony

You can't join Talon Talk or the members' Facebook Group, but you can like the public Facebook Page to keep up with baronial goings-on.
