What Are the Different Types of Actorsingers Productions?
Updated
Actorsingers runs three distinct production tracks: Mainstage, Second Stage & Fringe, and Teen Actorsingers. They differ mainly in when they perform, where they perform, and who is eligible to audition. If you're deciding whether to audition or what to go see, the eligibility age and season are the two details that matter most.
Mainstage
The flagship track, and the one Actorsingers has been producing since 1955.
- Frequency and season: Typically two shows a year, one in the spring and one in the fall.
- Venue: Keefe Auditorium.
- Who can audition: Open to anyone ages 16 and above.
This is the track to look at if you're an adult performer, or if you want the traditional large-scale community theatre experience as an audience member.
Second Stage & Fringe
A newer track that began in 2015 with the New Hampshire debut of American Idiot the Musical.
- Programming goal: Produce shows that appeal to non-traditional theatre goers and regular theatre goers alike.
- Stated aim: Attract a new generation to theatre, both in the audience and behind the scenes.
If mainstream musicals aren't your draw, this is the track most likely to program something different. Note that the source material describes the intent of the series but does not list a fixed season, venue, or audition age for Fringe — check the current show page before planning around it.
Teen Actorsingers
The youth track, built around a summer musical.
- Season: One hit musical every summer.
- Who can audition: Ages 13–19.
- Audition window: Typically sometime between March and May.
- Past shows: Legally Blonde, Grease, Swing!, Copacabana, Urinetown, Fame, Footloose, The Wiz, and more.
The March–May audition window is the practical takeaway here: if you're a teen performer or a parent, that's the period to watch, well ahead of the summer performance.
