What Are the Three Dunes at Dragon Dune and Which One Should You Choose?

Updated

Dragon Dune in Mossel Bay, South Africa, has three sandboarding slopes: Baby Dune (100 m), Big-Boy Dune (180 m), and Dragon Dune (350 m long, 170 m high). Which one you ride depends on your experience and confidence — instructors teach beginners on Baby Dune, riders who are scared of heights or not ready for the biggest slope build confidence on Big-Boy Dune, and thrill-seekers go for Dragon Dune. You don't pick in isolation: instructors assess your ability and guide you to the right dune during the session.

The three dunes compared

Dune Distance Best for What to expect
Baby Dune 100 m Beginners Instructors teach the basics on a gentle slope, with a steeper descent available as you improve
Big-Boy Dune 180 m Anyone scared of heights or not ready for "Big Daddy" A smaller version of the Dragon that builds confidence, with ocean views and regular dolphin and whale sightings
Dragon Dune 350 m Thrill-seekers and confident riders 170 m high, rides up to 350 m long, and belly-board speeds of up to 90 km/h

How to decide which dune is right for you

  • Never sandboarded before: Start on Baby Dune. The gentle slope lets instructors walk you through the basics before you attempt anything steeper.
  • Nervous about heights or the big drop: Choose Big-Boy Dune. It's explicitly positioned as the confidence-builder for people who aren't ready for Dragon Dune, and the ocean views (plus occasional dolphins and whales) make the ride worthwhile on their own.
  • Want the biggest ride in South Africa: Dragon Dune is the one. At 350 m long and 170 m high, the site describes it as overwhelming all competition in the country.
  • Not confident standing up at all: You can sit down or ride a belly board instead of standing. Belly boards are how the 90 km/h top speed has been reached.

You don't need to commit to a single dune in advance — the instructors place you according to your experience and confidence, so you can move up as you improve during the session.
