What customization options does BlankSheetMusic.net offer for printable staff paper?
Updated
BlankSheetMusic.net lets you build a print-ready staff page from a set of templates, then adjust page size, orientation, margins, key signature, time signature, signature placement, color intensity, and stroke width before printing. It is a good fit if you need a specific clef or tablature layout, a particular key or time signature pre-printed on the staff, or a page sized for A4, Letter, or Legal paper. The options are selected on the page itself, and the Print button sends the current configuration to your printer.
Templates: choosing the staff layout
The template list is the first decision, because it determines what each staff line represents. Available templates include:
- No clef staff — plain staves, with or without a lyrics line
- Single clefs — Treble clef (G), Bass clef (F), Alto clef (C), Tenor clef (C), each with an optional lyrics line for the treble and bass versions
- Tablature — 4, 5, 6, and 7 string TAB
- Clef + TAB combinations — Treble clef with 4, 6, or 7 string TAB; Bass clef with 4, 5, or 6 string TAB
- Keyboard layouts — Piano staff, Piano + staff, Piano + treble clef (G) staff, Organ staff
- Choral layouts — SATB, SATB + piano staff, SAB, SSA, SSATB
- Percussion — Drums and percussions, Percussion single line, and alternate-clef versions of both
If you are writing for one instrument, pick the single-clef or TAB template that matches it. If you are scoring for several parts at once, the combined templates (piano plus a clef, SATB plus piano, clef plus TAB) save you from aligning separate pages yourself.
Page size, orientation, and margins
Page size
Choose from A4, Letter, Legal, or Custom. Custom lets you enter your own page width and height, with units in mm, cm, or in.
Orientation
Switch between Portrait and Landscape. Landscape is useful for wide layouts such as piano plus TAB or multi-part choral scores.
Margins
Margin presets are Default, Minimum, and None, plus a Custom option. With Custom you set margin top, left, bottom, and right individually. Choosing None maximizes the printable area, which matters if your printer has a narrow non-printable border — check your printer's minimum margins before relying on it.
Musical notation settings
Key signature
The key signature list covers all major and relative minor keys from zero to seven accidentals:
- Sharps: C Maj / A min, G Maj / E min (1♯), D Maj / B min (2♯), A Maj / F♯ min (3♯), E Maj / C♯ min (4♯), B Maj / G♯ min (5♯), F♯ Maj / D♯ min (6♯), C♯ Maj / A♯ min (7♯)
- Flats: F Maj / D min (1♭), B♭ Maj / G min (2♭), E♭ Maj / C min (3♭), A♭ Maj / F min (4♭), D♭ Maj / B♭ min (5♭), G♭ Maj / E♭ min (6♭), C♭ Maj / A♭ min (7♭)
Time signature
Options are None, Common, Cut common, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 2/2, 6/8, and 12/8.
Signature placement
You can print the key and time signature on All staves or on the First stave only. First stave only is the conventional look for most published scores; All staves helps players who read from the middle of a page.
Visual weight: color and stroke width
- Color: Dark, Normal, Light, Faint
- Stroke width: Thin, Normal, Thick
Lighter color and thinner strokes use less ink and can make pencil annotations easier to see. Darker color and thicker strokes hold up better through photocopying or scanning.
Printing and sharing a configuration
Click Print to send the current setup to your printer. The site also provides a Share this link that encodes your exact format, so you can bookmark it or send it to someone else and return to the same configuration later. Note that the site is responsive and some buttons are hidden on small screens — rotating a phone to landscape can reveal them.
A practical example
Suppose you want a practice page for a B♭ clarinet player working in E♭ major with a 6/8 feel. You would select the Treble clef (G) staff template, set the key signature to E♭ Maj / C min (3♭), set the time signature to 6/8, keep signature placement on First stave only, choose A4 portrait with Default margins, and print. If you also want TAB underneath for a guitarist reading the same piece, switch to the Treble clef (G) + 6 string TAB template and repeat the same key, time, and page settings.
Common snags
- Margins set to None but the printer still clips the edge. Most printers cannot print to the physical edge of the paper; use Minimum or a Custom margin instead.
- Buttons missing on a phone. The layout hides some controls on narrow screens — rotate the device.
- Need to report a problem. Bug reports are collected through the site's X.com account, @staffpaper, via Direct Message.
- Want the same page again later. Use the Share this link rather than trying to recreate every setting by hand.
