What developer libraries for Gridfinity are available?
Updated
If you want to generate Gridfinity-compatible parts from code rather than clicking through a web generator, gridfinity.xyz points to three code ecosystems: Build123d, CadQuery, and OpenSCAD. Each has multiple community repositories that produce parameterized components like baseplates and bins for 3D printing. Pick the one that matches the CAD language you already work in.
Build123d libraries
Build123d is a Python CAD library, and these repos create Gridfinity-capable objects:
- PaulBone/gfthings — generates several different kinds of Gridfinity-compatible objects for 3D printing.
- Ruudjhuu/gridfinity_build123d — Python modules for creating Gridfinity-capable objects.
- moritzmhmk/gridfinity-build123d — another library for creating Gridfinity objects in Build123d.
Choose these if you want a Python-first workflow and are comfortable scripting geometry directly.
CadQuery libraries
CadQuery is another Python CAD option, with two listed ports:
- kmeisthax/gridfinity-cadquery — a port of Zach Freedman's Gridfinity storage system to CadQuery.
- michaelgale/cq-gridfinity — Python classes for creating Gridfinity-compatible parameterized components such as baseplates and boxes.
These suit you if your existing tooling or team standard is CadQuery, or you prefer its class-based approach to parameterized parts.
OpenSCAD libraries
OpenSCAD is a script-based modeler, and the wiki lists three recreations:
- vector76/gridfinity_openscad — a recreation of Zack Freedman's Gridfinity system in OpenSCAD.
- ostat/gridfinity_extended_openscad — accurately reproduces the original Gridfinity bins while adding extra features and customization options.
- kennetek/gridfinity-rebuilt-openscad — a ground-up port (with a few extra features) of the stock Gridfinity bins in OpenSCAD.
Pick OpenSCAD if you want a lightweight, code-only modeler and prefer its declarative syntax over Python.
How to choose
| If you want… | Start with |
|---|---|
| Python scripting, modern CAD API | Build123d repos |
| Python with a class-based component model | CadQuery repos |
| A minimal, code-only modeler | OpenSCAD repos |
| To reproduce stock bins closely with extra options | ostat/gridfinity_extended_openscad or kennetek/gridfinity-rebuilt-openscad |
All of these let you create compatible parameterized components — baseplates, bins, and similar parts — rather than editing meshes by hand. The underlying system is free, open source, and almost 100% 3D printable, with the original designs released under the MIT license, so the code libraries inherit that permissive, community-extended spirit.
If you'd rather not code at all, the same wiki page also lists online generators (Perplexing Labs' Gridfinity Generator, gridfinitygenerator.com, GridfinityCreator, Extrabold.tools, tooltrace.ai, and a visual layout planner) as no-code alternatives.
