What discussion categories are available on Arch Linux Forums?

Updated

The Arch Linux Forums are organized into a small number of top-level sections, with most day-to-day help concentrated under Technical Issues and Assistance. That section contains the subforums where you should post depending on your problem: Newbie Corner, Installation, Kernel & Hardware, Applications & Desktop Environments, Laptop Issues, Networking/Server/Protection, Multimedia and Games, Arch Linux Guided Installer, and System Administration. Other top-level sections cover Arch-specific discussion, package management and the AUR, and community contributions.

Technical Issues and Assistance subforums

This is where most questions belong. Each board has a stated purpose, and posting in the right one improves your chance of a useful answer.

  • Newbie Corner — beginners' subforum for general Arch issues. The board description explicitly asks you to consult the Arch wiki and the web first, and to try the forum search function at the upper left before posting.
  • Installation — issues related to installing the Arch Linux operating system.
  • Kernel & Hardware — kernel and hardware support problems and questions.
  • Applications & Desktop Environments — workstation, WM/DE, configuration, printing and mounting issues, general and productivity apps, KDE, GNOME, etc. Sound and video questions are directed to the Multimedia subforum instead.
  • Laptop Issues — running Arch on laptops.
  • Networking, Server, and Protection — networking, server software (apache, php, mysql), and communications security (firewall, ssh).
  • Multimedia and Games — audio/video/image issues, playback, creation and editing, plus game support and discussion.
  • Arch Linux Guided Installer — questions and support for issues involving the Arch Linux Guided Installer (archinstall).
  • System Administration — systemd configuration, udev rules, systemwide logging, bootloader configuration, etc. The board notes a rule of thumb: if you don't need root access for the issue, it doesn't belong here.

How to pick a board

  1. Identify whether your problem is installation, hardware/kernel, a desktop application, networking, multimedia, or system-level administration.
  2. Match it to the closest subforum above. If it is a general beginner question, Newbie Corner is the intended starting point.
  3. If your issue involves archinstall specifically, use the Guided Installer board rather than Installation.
  4. If the issue requires root access and concerns system configuration, System Administration is the appropriate board; otherwise it likely belongs elsewhere.
  5. Before posting, follow the Newbie Corner guidance: check the Arch wiki, search the web, and use the forum search at the upper left.

Practical notes

  • Several boards are moderated by the same team (ewaller, fukawi2, Lone_Wolf, schard, Slithery, V1del, WorMzy), so moderation style is consistent across the technical subforums.
  • The forum index shows active and unanswered topic views, which is useful for finding threads that still need a response.
  • Posting in the most relevant board is the stated way to get better responses; off-topic posts in the wrong subforum are more likely to be moved or ignored.
