What Does Mibble MIB Parser Include?

Updated

Mibble is an open-source SNMP MIB (SMI) parser library for Java, and its distribution covers four things: the parsing library itself, a bundled set of standard IANA and IETF MIBs, a graphical MIB browser with a simple SNMP manager, and command-line tools for MIB formatting and validation. If your goal is to read MIB files and access their contents programmatically from Java, the library is the part you need; the browser and CLI apps are conveniences built on top of it.

The four components

Java library for parsing SNMP MIBs

The core of Mibble is a Java library that reads MIB files written in ASN.1 syntax and exposes an API to access the information they contain. According to the project, that includes OIDs, types, descriptions, comments, and the original MIB source text. This is the piece you would embed in your own application.

Standard IANA and IETF MIBs

Mibble ships with all standard IANA and IETF MIBs. This matters because MIB files frequently import definitions from other MIBs, so having the standard set on hand avoids hunting down dependencies before you can parse anything.

Graphical MIB browser with a simple SNMP manager

The package includes a GUI MIB browser that also provides a simple SNMP manager. This is useful for inspecting a MIB's structure and OIDs interactively rather than writing code first.

Command-line apps for MIB formatting and validation

Two CLI utilities are included: one for formatting MIB files and one for validating them. These are handy for checking that a MIB parses cleanly or for normalizing its layout.

What Mibble is not

The project is explicit on this point: Mibble is not an SNMP stack and not a MIB compiler. It only provides the functionality for reading SNMP MIB files — that is, it is an SMI parser.

If you need both MIB parsing and SNMP manager functionality, the intended approach is to combine Mibble with a separate SNMP stack, such as SNMP4J or Westhawk's SNMP stack. Mibble can also serve as the basis for building a MIB compiler, since it exposes all the readable information from the MIB files.

Choosing based on your task

Your goal What you need from Mibble
Read MIB contents from Java code The parsing library
Resolve imports without sourcing MIBs yourself The bundled IANA/IETF MIBs
Inspect OIDs interactively The graphical MIB browser
Check or normalize MIB files The command-line formatting and validation apps
Send/receive SNMP traffic Mibble plus a separate SNMP stack (e.g., SNMP4J)
Compile MIBs Build on Mibble's parsing API; it is not a compiler itself

Licensing note

Mibble is dual-licensed under GNU GPL and a commercial license, with full source code provided under both. The GPL permits free usage but restricts redistribution of Mibble or derived code to the same license; the commercial license permits inclusion in almost any software product and is purchased from the Mibble Store. If you plan to embed Mibble in a proprietary product, the commercial license is the relevant path — see the project's commercial license FAQ for details.
