What Does WMEMS Do to Improve Emergency Medical Services?

Updated

WMEMS (Western Mass Emergency Medical Services WMEMS Committee, Inc.) improves emergency medical services in western Massachusetts by coordinating communication among EMS providers, evaluating and setting regional quality standards, offering training and education, and developing protocols and policies for implementation. It serves as the state-designated regional EMS council for Region 1, covering Berkshire County, most of Franklin County, Hampden County, and Hampshire County.

The Four Core Functions

WMEMS describes its work through four connected activities. Each one addresses a different part of the regional EMS system.

1. Coordinating Communication Among Providers

WMEMS coordinates communication among the organizations that respond to and receive emergencies:

  • Ambulance services
  • First responders
  • Hospital emergency departments

Because these groups operate independently, gaps in communication can delay care or create inconsistent practices across the four-county area. WMEMS acts as the convening body that keeps them connected.

2. Evaluating and Setting Quality Standards

The committee evaluates and sets standards of quality for regional EMS. This means looking at how services are delivered across the region and establishing benchmarks that providers can be measured against, rather than leaving each service to define quality on its own.

3. Offering Training, Education, and Research

WMEMS provides training, education, and medical services research opportunities. These are aimed at the providers operating in the region and support keeping skills and knowledge current.

4. Developing Protocols and Policies

The committee develops appropriate protocols and policies for implementation. Protocols translate regional standards into day-to-day practice for responders and services.

Who WMEMS Serves and Who It Answers To

WMEMS is a regional nonprofit corporation designated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Massachusetts has five EMS regions; WMEMS serves Region 1.

Its board is intended to include broad representation from the communities it serves: consumers, municipal governments, hospitals, ambulance services, and other EMS providers across the four-county area. WMEMS states that it seeks regular input from these constituencies.

How to Engage With WMEMS

If you need to attend a meeting or reach the committee, note the current meeting format:
