What Features and Addons Does Scratch Addons Offer?
Updated
Scratch Addons is a browser extension that bundles new and existing features and themes for the Scratch website and project editor into one configurable package. It is free and open source, and its features are delivered as individual "addons" that you can enable, disable, and configure separately. If you use Scratch in a browser and want to customize how the site and editor behave, this is what the extension offers.
How the addon model works
Scratch Addons is not a single monolithic feature. It consists of addons, each of which is a discrete feature or theme. The extension provides an interface for controlling the settings of each one, so you can turn on only what you want and adjust how it behaves. This means the feature list is effectively a menu you build for yourself rather than a fixed set of changes applied all at once.
Website features
These addons affect the Scratch website outside the project editor.
- Thumbnail uploader — adds a dropdown next to the "Set Thumbnail" button on the project page, letting you set a project thumbnail to any image, including GIFs.
- Follow topics after posting — automatically follows forum topics you post on.
- Copy link to comment button — adds a "Copy Link" button next to the "Report" button on all comments.
- Confirmations — asks if you are sure when committing actions under your Scratch account, such as sharing projects.
- Cloud games — available from the Scratch Addons icon, shows how many Scratchers are currently on multiplayer projects and their usernames.
Editor features
These addons change how the project editor behaves.
- Larger "Save Now" button — extends the size of the Save Now button to make it easier to click.
- Block switching — right-click a block to switch it to a related block.
- Clone counter — adds a counter above the stage showing the total number of clones.
- Hex color picker — adds hex code inputs to color pickers.
- Data category tweaks — provides tweaks for the Data (Variables) block category.
- Fix sprite pane glitching — fixes a bug where scripts, costumes, and sounds cannot be dragged into sprites without the sprites jumping around in the sprite pane.
- File drag and drop — lets you drag images and sounds from your file manager into the sprite pane or costume/sound list, and drag text files into lists or "ask and wait" inputs.
- Enhanced clean up tool — improves the clean up feature in the code area's right-click menu with multiple columns and suggestions for removing unused variables and lists.
- Developer tools — adds options to the right-click menu for copying, cutting, and pasting blocks, swapping variables, and making space to the right.
- Messages in editor — surfaces messages within the editor.
The site notes that the listed highlights are only a subset and that more addons exist.
Themes and customization
Beyond individual features, Scratch Addons includes themes for the Scratch website and project editor. Each feature and theme has its own settings in the extension's interface, so customization happens per addon rather than globally.
Language support
The extension is not English-only. It is available in Spanish, Russian, Japanese, French, and many other languages.
What to check before installing
- Confirm your browser is supported, since this is a browser extension.
- Decide which addons you actually want, because each one can be enabled independently.
- Note that some addons change editor behavior (for example, block switching and developer tools) while others change site behavior (for example, comment link copying), so you can scope your setup to just one area.
